Question Thunderbird I.R.S....

A question for the folks that have installed the Thunderbird I.R.S.

units in their Effies...

Did ya use a Super Coupe, LX, or what?

What model year?

Did ya snag the transmission & driveshaft too?

AOD or 4R70W?

Parts are startin' to pile up...

Seems like most are using the t-bird/cougar or markVIII rear end with a V-8 engine between the years of 1991-1996. Others may apply. I understand the differances are bags vs. springs and rear end on markVIII is aluminium. The t-bird/ cougar springs will work in the markVIII. Drive shaft good to keep. Buy the whole car and use everything you can. I chose the markVIII because I thought it would have less hot-rodding on it (wear and tear). chuck

Unhappy I wish...

...we had room to haul a whole donor car back in the yard...

Not gonna happen...Home improvement-yard work already in

progress...cement work starting & landscaping...adding a cement patio off

the driveway & new shed back in the corner of the yard to clear-up some

wiggle-room in the garage for me AND my girl!!!

Local bone-yards keep telling me they have the cars & when I get

there...oops...all gone...got a line AGAIN on a couple dudes partin'

Super Coupes that will let the complete rears go cheap but can't find

anything newer than '89 or '90 model years...not much else available

for a fair price...we'll see...

Try craigslist.com That is where I found mine. Do you have a pick-a -part type salvage yard? Good places, you take apart and reasonable prices.chuck

I got mine out of a 91 Super Coupe. I found it through the Recycler, someone was parting the car. The Super Coupe has a limited slip differential. The cost of the rear end was $100.

I believe you saw mine. I got mine out of a 95 LX. Also used engine, transmission and we even machined parts and welded upper control arms for the IFS. If I knew how to take pictures from e-mail and add to this site I could send them. So much I can't do on this computer but I am learning. My son supposed to show me how but we have been to busy.

I took one out of a 95 Mark VIII at a U-Pull-It yard. Cost was $175.00 complete. I've got pictures of the install on my gallery.

Unless the t-bird is different than the MarkVIII, the front mounts have been cut and re-welded at a higher position. Chuck

Chuck you are so right about the front mounts. We cut them and refabed them to the frame leaving all of the original pads. It looks much nicer than having them low down like they were. Made mounts for the rear and welded them to the frame. They work very nice but you have to remember to set drive shaft angle. Larry.

T-bird IRS

Larry: That is a very nice compact installation. I had thought about doing the same to my front mounts, but couldn't see how to do it I agree the front low mounts are ugly and could snag something like a high curb or speed bump, etc. If you have another pic or two of your front mount modification I would like to see it ,as you don't have a gallery yet. chuck

Kicking this back up, what is the width of frames that these come off of? I am debating this for a newer Ford F series...

Thunderbirds don't have frames. The cradle for the differential bolts to bottom of the floor pan of the car and provides the mounting points for the suspension, isolating it from noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
