Yesterday I started up the truck and got about 1/2 block when the check engine light came on, the idle became rough and I had near total power loss. The truck recovered, engine light went off and everything seemed fine. Then it happened again (just a few seconds later), and again. I switched to the other tank thinking it was perhaps a fuel issue. All of this happened on a bit of an uphill.
I turned around and headed for home (downhill), but the idle returned to normal, check engine light went off and the truck has run fine since then (towed a boat about 100 miles and returned with the empty trailer after an overnight). I topped off the tanks and switched back to the front fuel tank on the return trip, so I'm thinking it was not fuel.
What's going on? Is this how a CPS dies? Any thoughts?
My rig is a 96 F250 xlt 4x4.

Thanks guys. I'm originally from Ann Arbor! Had many friends from Muskegon back in the days. Ever cross paths with the Holmstrom family?
Is this likely to end with a surprise break down? I'm thinkin I'll need to pay for this service (no ability to pull a code and limited experience under the hood) and would like to wait since the truck ran fine for me after the initiall problem.
Like TJ said, pull the connections at the valve covers and see if they're bunt. There are four of them and they're easy to get to. If they all look fine, then you'll have to start looking for someone who can pull a code for you. Action and TJ are right on the money w/ the diagnosis. Very quick on the response to, guess thats why we call him action. Reps sent.

Holmstrom sounds familiar but not ringing any bells.
As for the truck it is very likely the problem will return. Its pretty common for them to come and go then finally GO. So yes you should have it looked into.
