I have a 2005 F250 with about 115000 now and recently the fuel mileage has started drastically falling. I was getting around 17-18 mpg and now it has dropped to around 11-12 and 8 towing. I have had it to Ford several times and they keep charging me and charging me and have gotten nowhere. They keep giving the truck a clean bill of health. Before I shaft ford and spending some serious money does anyone have any suggestions where I should start. The truck has been flawless until recently.
All Filters have been changed and or cleaned. I want to start with the non computer diagnosis problems that jsut can not be found by computer. But really don't know where to start.
6.0 Fuel Economy:
Ford vehicles equipped with the 6.0 PowerStroke diesel are not rated for fuel economy by the EPA. If economy is in question, a boost test should be performed. If boost reaches 22-25 PSI in third gear, wide open throttle under load, then the engine is operating normally and no economy related repairs need to be performed. If not in specs, then the engine will need to be diagnosed--check sensor reading, VGT and EGR operation, fuel pressure and quality, crankcase pressure, intake or exhaust restriction, exhaust or CAC leaks.
Fuel economy will be affected by many factors, including: excessive idle time (one hour equals approximately 33 miles of driving), fuel quality and blend, ambient temperature, driving habits, vehicle use, towing, loads, add-on accessories. Broadcast Message 1271, 4450, 6989
I know a guy here in Golden, CO that uses a complete intake and fuel cleaning system to remedy issues like yours. My neighbor took his 07 with over 100k miles, to him for a blown HG and he also performed the intake cleaning that I was talking about. He said the truck ran better after this service, than it did brand new.
I don't know where your located, but I'm sure someone in your area does this service. Be careful with the dealers, if you had any techs that new what they were doing, they would have sold you an intake (I think they charge over 1k just for the part). That will only fix part of the problem according to Greg. You could give him a call and see what he thinks, he's a really good guy, and the most knowledgable PSD I've met. His name is Greg, Advanced automotive.
OK, heading to GA from Tampa to hunt. Truck got to GA and just died, kind of like the fuel was being shut off over a 2 min period. After I had it towed to the dealer in Perry GA (Amie there is great!) found it had a bad High Pressure Oil pump that drives the fuel injectors. Before the truck died it was getting around 15-16 mpg on the highway, when it was new 17 to 18 mpg on the highway. With a new pressure pump I am back up to 18mpg on the highway. I have heard the pumps are having internal leakage, one can only think this may be a cause for many people since I don’t believe there is any way to test it except to R&R at the tune of $1500.
Forgot to mention: they changed the oil filter and found several gaskets in the canister. Guess the boys at the 5 min oil change don’t have time to fish them out. Filter was crushed due to the lack of clearance. Watch those dam monkeys every time you get the oil changed!!!!
LUV this dam truck! since new 140k.
Doing the Kenwood DVD/CD/GPS/Bluetooth/rear camera next week!

Truck finally paid off this month!
My brother in law asked me last month where I get my oil changed, after nearly ending up with a bloody stump in my mouth I said "In front of these two hands".
I would never pay someone to change my oil due to cost and the untrained morons that they hire.

A buddy of mine was getting his oil changed at a local "quick lube" place and they never actually changed it the past 3 times he had it in and it ended up blowing the truck up once it broke it down enough. This was just further reinforcement for me to keep changing my own oil.
