Does anyone have a problem with oil leaks? My 2005 diesel drips a little oil everytime I drive it. It only has 11K miles. The dealership says it needs the bed plate gasket replaced. They need to remove the cab and engine to fix the problem. This is a two week process to fix. Does that seem a little extreme? I am nevous about them tearing apart a truck that has only 11K miles.
Bed plate leaks are fairly common. The procedure to remove the cab and engine is necessary to fix this leak. Many folks will live w/ a minor leak (until it gets to the point of making a puddle under the truck) just to not risk other problems being introduced by removing everything. This being said, if the shop is a good one, you should not need to worry.
I've learned from other posters that bedplate leaks are fairly common as bismic said. My truck had a leak as well but was not leaving a puddle anywhere. I brought it to a dealer and they put some UV dye in the oil to better determine where the leak was originating. After driving it for 500 miles i brought it back and they found i had a bad HG and coolant leak.
I would def recommend having them put dye in the oil to make sure it was a bad bed plate and not something else......good luck!
mine has the same thing, small drip, but has not been diagonosed. If it is a bed plate leak would the heads have to be removed? I am thinking with the right dealership it might be advantageous to have head studs installed while they are at it. I would offer to buy the studs and as long as they would install them.
My truck was diagnosed with the same thing and I wouldn't risk it, at least not now. When I get closer to the end of 100k warranty then I have them fix it.
My truck had the bedplate leak in December and Hemborg Ford fixed it without removing the cab or engine. They said they did it fairly frequently, not removing the engine or cab that is. Seven months now and the leak hasn't returned, knock on wood. Took them 3 days to get it back to me.

How can a bedplate leak be repaired in the chassis? I don't see how you can even get the oil pan off while engine is in the truck? Isn't the "bedplate" the part of the engine block below the centerline of the crankshaft that holds all the lower main bearing inserts??
My 05 6.0 excursion developed a bed plate oil leak. The pulled the engine, repaired, and had it back to me in less than a weak. I was a little nervous, but they fixed it. No more leaks.

Brought mine to Boyer Ford and they fixed it without removing the cab also. I think they did pull the engine though. They did the UV die thing and found it right way. Actually I brought my truck in on a Tuesday morning so they could take a look to find the leak, they called me at about 10am and told me it was the bed plate. I had the truck back by Wednesday at close. I am always amazed at the service I get from them. 30k since the leak and not a drop, knock on wood...
Mine also had it for a while. Had it fixed at about 45,000 miles. The Ford shop here pulled the motor and trans (without raising the cab) and had it back to me the next afternoon. No more leaks and still runs as good as ever.

Makes me wonder if these leaks weren't of a less serious nature and from somewhere else and the dealer is sticking it to Ford by billing them for fixing bedplate leaks.
They tod me that they did drop the trans but didn't pull the engine or remove the cab. Wether or not they didn't maybe raise them a few inches or not I couldn't tell you.

Maybe its just the Missouri in me but......................
I would think most anyone who has ever changed mainbearings on an engine in chassis would find it very difficult to picture how someone could/would be able to remove every main bearing cap at once from a V8 engine in the heads up, crank down position on an engine stand...........now to successfully be able to do it while the engine is still in the truck chassis to me is amazing. I either have to tip my hat to someone who can do it or suspect there is something fishy with the story.
When we do this at the job, we remove the engine and put it on a rotary stand. I think it's the better way to go.... you can do it how you want , but the leak need to be repair, it's the end result who's important.
