Cleaning Exhaust

Tonight, I was driving home when I noticed on my digital display that it came up and said "cleaning exhaust." Has anyone else seen that before? Does that mean that the truck was in regen. I did not lose any HP nor did I blow out any white smoke.

Correct, the truck was in regen. The Cleaning Exhaust message displays briefly as it enters regen...

I have been watching my message screen more than the road waiting for my first regen. I have seen nothing and I have over 700 miles?? the ONLY indication of a regen I have so far was at a stop light. I was at a complete stop and suddenly the rpms jumped up and nearly knocked me in to the car in front of me because I wasnt expecting this. It held the rpms for about 30 seconds and then returned to normal. No message, no smoke, nothing. When the light turned I got on the highway for 30 minutes and still never saw anything (manual says I have to stay above 30 mph for 20 minutes).

Was this related to a regen somehow? Why no message? Why did it happen at an idle for only 30 seconds? I read on here that no matter what the truck will regen within 500 miles but I have not seen the message and I have been watching and listening like a hawk and have seen nothing so far.

Mine went into a regen mode at around 600 miles. I just happened to see something flash across the instrument panel, something like "cleaning diesel filter" (or at least that's what I thought it said). The only reason I knew it was happening is because I had all the windows open and I was driving next to some buildings and I heard this loud, I mean LOUD, hissing sound coming from the exhaust when I accelerated. I made a turn to head down a frontage road and 10 miles or so later.... all gone. It freaked me out and I was near the dealership and almost stopped in, but reading other posts they all describe pretty much the same shenanigans.

My truck is job # 2. It is my understanding the only job # 3 trucks flash a message about regen.

I have 5,500 miles and 7 months of ownership since brand new, and still have not been able to identify a regen.

This trip to PA from GA I averaged 12 mpg with a light foot and 5 mph over speed limits. Even allowed a Dodge or two to pass. Couldn't allow any Chebbies...

I just rolled over 1800 on my F450. My wife drove it for about 50 miles somewhere back around 4-500 on the odometer. I have not seen anything to suggest it has gone into regen. It is a Job 3 that I picked up 2 weeks ago.

There is a new flash out that has this, cleaning filter message, it also keeps regens from happening under 25mph.

There is a PCM reflash outlined in TSB 08-13-2 and TSB 08/13/3 which supersedes another reflash in TSB 07-17-31. The reflash in TSB 08-13-2/3 adds new message center display updates: "Stop Safely Now", "Engine Warming", "Drive to Clean Exhaust Filter", "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" and "Exhaust Filter Drive Complete". The earlier Job #1 trucks did not have these Messages in the message center prior to this re flash. The reflash also reprograms engine calibrations and EGR.

The big change in the re flash is to the DPF regeneration. Regeneration now will no longer initiate at idle or in PTO mode. When "Drive to Clean Exhaust Filter" is displayed on the message center, it will stay on until adequate drive cycle is completed. If the vechicle is operated in a manner to allow effective automatic cleaning the message center will display "Cleaning Exhaust Filter" indicating normal regen process. There is no 25 Mph threshold for regen, just will not initiate at idle or in PTO. The EGR is now disabled at idle determined by exhaust temperature and not idle time.

My job #1 6.4 PSd truck has shown any regeneration symptoms once, but after the reflash last week, the message "cleaning exhaust filter' came on for a short time. Now I have the method to know when I am in regeneration.

Lastly, TSB 08-13-2 is for trucks built prior to 8/03/2007 and TSB 08-13-3 is for trucks built 8/03/2007 to 1/03/2008.

The flash is available, but do not expect a letter from Ford telling you to bring the truck in for a free fix like they would if it were a recall. The flash falls under a TSB so the dealer is not required to flash it under warranty unless the truck exhibits "issues" listed in the TSB. Fortunately the list of issues associated with the TSB should allow for the flash to be covered under warranty quite easliy. All you should really have to do is tell the dealer that you do not want the truck to regen at idle. For your truck, this would fall under TSB 08-13-2...
