ALL very good points. I've heard the 6-speed gets about 1-1.5 better MPG. If true all one has to do is the math on say, 100K, and calculate the actual value of buying an 08' w/o the 6-speed vs the price of a new 09' w/o the major incentives the 08's are offering. I bet the 08's win out every time.
i was reading in a buddys truck mag it was an add from ford for the new 2009 f-150 said that it would be commin out with a 5.0L 340hp motor ??? said that it has a longer stroke then the curent 5.4L and 4.6. just what i was readin anyone else hear about this.

I read in an article by Ford that the new 6 speed would improve MPG by .6 MPGs.
The real improvement will be the smoother shifting and power band improvement.

.6 MPG isn't exactly mind boggling numbers now is it? FORGET the smoother shifting we need BETTER MPG in America.
Now the 1-1.5 you quoted was most likely reported somewhere and this gain may be true. With the 6spd providing .6 mpgs and a potentially more efficient 5.4L providing anywhere from .4-.9 mpg gain. So it could be reasonable, but have no factual basis to support this claim.

if that 5.0 has a longer stroke than the 5.4, I can see a 4000 rpm redline in it's future...
if anything, it should be a big bore 4.6... the stroke is ok on these, esp the 5.4, the small bore is what's choking these engines up, shrouding the valves unnecessarily..
let's hope for some dohc heads too... hey, we can dream, right?

The 5.0L is supposed to be a 3.6x" X 3.6x" roughly square engine, a mild "big bore-stroker" 4.6 with extended cylinder liners to keep the piston skirts in the bore at BDC. Heard that from 3 very reliable sources, and so it's very likely the case. Logic dictates it must be true as well, as it would be the most reliable method for achieving 5.0L from the 4.6. I know the 3.7" bore failed Ford's long-term durability tests, and I'm fairly certain a 3.75" stroke stock bore engine would as well.
All sources also said the 5.0L is a DOHC 4V design, not just for increased cylinder head flow but also for the ability to run Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (TiVCT).
It is also supposed to achieve better FE than the 4.6 3V, which does pretty well itself. Latest rumors put the the 5.0L "Triton" at 360 Hp and 380-390 TQ and the PFI Mustang version anywhere from 400-425 HP and 360+TQ. DI is supposed to take the Mustang version up to 440 HP or more.
Unless wishy-washy management kills this engine, this will be the engine Ford should have made a long time ago.

hope you're right... add in direct injection (yeah right..) and that motor would be pretty stout in n/a form to begin with... add in 2 turbos and we'll be in business
