regulator/alternator wiring help

hello, on my truck i went to replace the regulator harness with one from a junkyard but my truck has a alt light and the other had guages, i couldnt figure it out, so i'm gonna try to build one from scratch.....could someone please draw me up a diagram showing where the wires go? also, where is the resistor located at for the light?............also, when i go to start the truck, my volt guage drops to zero, but the truck does nothing........ could i get a diagram for the switch too, and try to diagnose that? thanks

The voltage going to zero sounds like a dead battery or a bad connection. Measure the voltage at the battery while you are trying to start it, not with it just sitting there. A true battery tester puts a load on the battery.

Here's a diagram for your alternator. The resistor is located around the light bulb. Make sure the bulb is mounted in a plastic socket with two wires, as you can see in the diagram it's not grounded. The resistor is there in case the light bulb burns out, it will still feed the regulator.

thanx this is what i needed, i looked around the bulb and its on the circuit board, so i dont see the resistor...can it go out? also, how important is the fusible link? do i need to use it when building another harness?

The fusible link is to protect the wiring in case something bad happens, like a wire rubbing against the body somewhere. There are a few wires under the hood and in the cab are not fused, so the fusible link protects them. I would re-use it myself.

Where is the 2 wire connector? In the cab or under the hood, and in what location? Green/red is usually a hot in run wire, and a large yellow is usually a hot from the battery wire.

Those colors are shown the diagram in my previous post. The green/red comes from the dash light, and triggers the alternator to go online when you turn the key. It hooks to the "I" terminal on the regulator. The yellow goes to the "A" terminal of the regulator, and is what the regulator uses to monitor the voltage at the battery.

sorry for so many questions, but i really appreciate your help...on my old one, there is a yellowish wire from the S on the reg to the alt and at the alternator it splits and goes to the 2 wire plugin with the green/red wire that plugs into the main harness, where does it go from there? choke?

Are you going to use a dash light? If so, wire it up just like the diagram above. If you are not going to use the dash light, there is another way to wire it.

If you are going to wire it using a dash light, then the green/red does not hook to the "s" terminal of the regulator. That is a harness from a differently configured truck.

If you are having problems reading the diagram above, I can give you a wire by wire description if you want do do it that way.

well, i went to oreillys today and they do have fusible links, but i wasnt sure to go for the 14 or 16 guage, one of the guys working there suggested that i put a 30amp fuse holder in instead......he says that this will work. will it? i searched earlier and found a post (i believe an old one of yours) about putting a 60amp maxi holder in.... is there any use in even trying the 30?

alright, i went ahead and used the 30 amp and got every thing wired up.....now it still wont start, i can run a hot wire to the red wire on the solenoid and it will crank. is the problem possibly my ignitoion switch? last week i tried starting it and the switch would not shut the starter off, which wire do i need to check coming out of the switch?

The 30 amp is probably going to be too small and cause nuisance blowing of the fuse. You should have a large yellow coming into the ignition switch. This is the battery hot wire. Make sure it's hot. Coming out of the ign switch should be a red/blue wire. This should be hot when you spring the switch to the start position. This red/blue wire will go to the neutral start switch somewhere on your truck, and the go to the solenoid "s" terminal. If you look, you should find the small wire on the solenoid is red/blue, and it should connect to the "s" terminal, not the "i" terminal.

alright, the red/blue wire is hot when i turn the switch. is the neutral switch on the tranny? the volts still drop to zero when i turn the key also, but that may be because it is hooked to accessory, the solenoid is hooked up correctly

If it's an automatic, the switch is usually mounted on the side of the tranny behind the shift lever on the driver's side. If it's a manual, then it's usually mounted on the clutch pedal. Some of the older trucks had it on the steering column.

If this truck has been converted from auto to manual, it's probably hanging in either location not hooked up at all. If you find it, and there is no switch or the switch is bad, you can get it running by taking the two red/blue's going to the switch and twist or jumper them together.

I redid your post with the picture with a link instead of the actual picture so the screen wasn't so wide. Here's the old post and the link;

its on the harness were talking about, heres a pic....in the upper right corner...its on both kinds of harnesses.
