get a big gold fish, dont take lots of moola to get a cold water tank up and running. fill it up and let it sit for a few days before you put any fish in it. get cheap fish at first and if they do well you are good to go.
Fish tanks can be a PITA. They require daily maintenance...whether it's a thorough cleaning, or just adding water...
We've had a couple 55-65 gallon tanks a few years ago.
We mainly dealt with the large, agressive fish: Oscars, swordtails, Cichlids, shark, catfish, etc... We even had a Silver Needlenose Gar, and a Blue lobster! The lobster escaped one day and crawled halfway across our house and down a flight of stairs!
We had to get rid of most of them as they got way too big for our tank. The Oscars were dinner-plate sized, the Algae-eater and the needlenose gar were about a foot long, and the Lobster was twice that long (including its feeler antennas).

i would have encouraged the lobster to keep on walking towards the kitchen
