Weed Burners

No, I'm not calling all pot-heads.

I want to know if anyone has used propane weed burners on goathead and other sticker type weeds, and how well it's worked for them. I'm trying to avoid multiple applictions of herbicide.

What kind of burner did you ue, and how long did a tank last? What coverage did you get....maybe a guess at how long it took to do a 10' by 10' area?

Any other comments you can think of?

Thanks,

Erik

I have a weedburner that I got from Northern. It is one of those that connects to a 5G tank with a long hose and has a flame tube at the end. The tube is about the size of a spray paint can.

It works pretty well on dry weeds and will cook live ones. After a few close calls, I would highly recommend having a buddy standing by with a water hose. Man weeds burn fast.

It burns gas pretty quick, if the layer of frost on the tank is any indication. I do not know how long a full tank will last, but I have never run out while using the tank from my BBQ.

If the weeds are dry I would guess it would take maybe 1 minute to burn a 10x10 area. Wear thick boots and things can get pretty hot.

These are good for burning along fence lines or clearing a garden patch. But like I said watch out for the fire spreading.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

They also work well as a charcoal or bbq pit starter. Two tools for the price of one!

No advice here , but it is neat how some posts on here bring back instant mental images for me. My 42 yr old divorcee neighbor always mowed her grass up to her chain link fence line, but was too weak to haul out the heavy weedwhacker to trim the fenceline. So, her big Italian neighbor got rid of the weeds in their common fence one day while she was at work. He used a propane burner. She came home that late evening and saw her black ,burned grass in her fence . She just flat freaked out and started screaming about how that dumb--- could have burned her house down. Never seen a skinny woman so mad.

Thanks for the input guys. I may give it a go, have to check first with the local firehouse to make sure it's legal this time of year. we go tinder dry prety fast, and I don't need to be a headline maker.

Get a pressurized water fire extinguisher, keep it handy. I have seen some pretty good sized brush fires start this way-

Oh Yeah. I plan to wet the ground around each area before using the burner, and will always be within length of my yard hoses, which run off 1" line. Good volume. Will wait for foggy mornings, too.
