Water softners
Anyone got some firsthand experience with them... I'm looking at getting one for mom. What's a good one? Should I get a water purifier system also? Where to buy? Sears, home depot, lowes or one of the water companies?

Just my $0.02 - get one that has a separate salt reservoir. Some of the softeners have the resin tank within the salt tank (esp. Kenmores), and it's harder to add the salt to those. The separate tank models let you pour the salt into a completely open top, whereas the in-tank models make you feed it in through a smaller angled opening.
Might be more money, but in the long run it'll be more convenient.
