I currently have a 4spd t19 behind my 6.9. I hate it because first and second gear are so low that I usually start in third unless I have a load. I am thinking about swapping in a c6, but I don't know how hard it is to go from manual to auto. Ideally I would like to find a zf5 but I haven't been able to find any for under 800 bucks around here. Would the c6 swap be worth it?
Thanks, Michael.
I have a C6 and it is ok. It really does need another gear with a lock up converter, but that would be an E4OD. I have never driven a T-19 before so I can not tell you if it is worth it.
Switching and transmission from standard to auto and visa versa is going to be hard. Best thing to do is get a donor truck with all the parts you need then scrap or sell the truck. This is just my opinion though.
Ya I figured it would be kinda hard. The only reason that I was seriously considering the c6 was because I have one laying around. But it came out of a 460, so I would have to change a lot of stuff. It just gets annoying trying to drive it around town.
I have had both the T19 and C-6 behind the IDI's both suck. But the T19 is worse. Too bad you didn't live closer I have 3 ZF-5 trans about to hit the scrap pile. You can find ZF-5 2wd trans in the You Pull yards often and they are only 79.99 plus tax.
Since the trans is from a 460, the bell won't quite work. Also, the stall converter is different. It might bolt, but the strength and stall speed are generally different. While you might not have such a low first, you also will have a higher rev at final, since the converter doesn't have lockup, it will spin at about 9/10:1.
I wish I could get my hands on a diesel ZF for that kind of money, I see them more for closer to 1000...

You can find a diesel ZF-5 for $79.99?!? For a gasser maybe, but for a diesel? I find that hard to believe...
Around here the ZF-5 for a diesel is in the $600 range. I have one for sale. If you are interested DirtStripHero, I can probably save you a couple of hundred bucks on one, even with shipping.
Sounds like you probably have 4.10 rear axle gears. I had 4.10s and a T-19 and like you say, it pretty well sucked. I swapped in a ZF-5, and the setup is just about ideal as far as I'm concerned. I start out in 2nd almost all the time - unless I'm starting out from a dead stop, going uphill and have more than 5k worth of load on, then I'll use 1st.
Thanks for the quick replies everyone. I think I am going to stay with the 4-speed for now, its not costing me any money except for a couple of dollars at the pump. But I do have a dana 60 lying around with 3.55 gears in it. I might throw that under there, although I will miss the dually.

The U pull yards are all flat rate around here. You pay for the tranny based on if its from a car or if its from a truck. Plenty of ZF-5 trannies end up there. Most are 2wd trans some are the harder to find 4wd units. Engines are sold by cylinder count so over the years I have picked up my share of 6.9 and 7.3 engines for 140.00 complete or 70.00 on half price day. Check in your area maybe you have one www.pickandpull.com there are others but that one is the cheapest.
