If the engine hasn't been bumped since you removed the distributor then you are a tooth or two off when you are trying to reinstall it. Lift it out just enough to move it another tooth and try it again until the slot on the end of it lines back up with the oil pump drive.
thanks for the input,have tried above methods and others with no luck!the pump shaft will not stay centered so there for its possible the shaft broke loose of the pump . I will remove pan tomorrow and go from there and let you know. this all started because msd ready to run dizzy went bad . its either the modual or pickup. the msd tech guy said that all rtr dizzy are not meant to be rebuilt by the public(bad design he said). $111 plus shipping both ways for them to fix! at 1 1/2years old and the certanty that it will break again its back to stock for know!
same thing just happened to me a couple days ago. pump shaft came out of pump. i used a 1/4 socket and extention to put it back in. the first time it took 10 min after that it was about 1 min to get it. i put in a procomp hei, 60 bucks off ebay runs great.the clip comes off the rod and after that when you remove the dizzy it pops out.
