Just replaced Heads on my 88' Bronco II. Put Crankshaft on #1 at TDC. Made sure both Valves were closed and Rotor was aimed at #1 on Distributor. Then I loosened #1 Adjustor where I had some play in the Rocker. Then I tightened it up to 0 Lash, and then put a white ink mark on the Adjustor and tightened it 1 1/2 Turns. Then I turned Crankshaft till I saw another set of valves closed and repeated the steps till I adjusted ALL of them. I've got 40psi at the Schrader Valve. Have a new Coil and am getting good Fire. Have new Air Filter. Have new Plugs, Oil and Filter, and Coolant. Have checked Fuel Cut Off Switch and all Grounds. WILL NOT RUN! Turns over real good. Have noticed when I hold accelerator to the floor it sounds like it's trying to crank. Have NEVER seen an engine I couldn't make run till NOW! Anybody have ANY ideas? The reason I replaced Heads was cause Engine overheated and blew the Head Gasket on the #2 cylinder. The #2 was literally pumping coolant for bout 15 minutes till I got home with it.
I pulled the plugs and there was gas on them. Checked the connectors at the injectors with the key on and got 12 volts all around. Checked the compression on the #2 cylinder where the Head Gasket blew and got 122lbs. You reckon that thing might have "jumped time"? But if it jumped time I wouldn't be getting any compression...right? Got everything I need fot that thing to crank and run BUT it wont! Never seen anything like it before!
Check the coil wire at the dist end for spark, then check #1 at the plug for spark. If no spark, then probably the TFI module. It is possible the overheated engine blew the TFI module.
Double check that you have it at TDC on the compression stroke. Put a 11 inch plastic tie in the plug hole and make sure it gets pushed out when the piston is at TDC and the rotor at #1.
I also replaced the heads on my other 90 Bronco II. It too had a blown head gasket. I had another good set of heads so I put them on while the originals were sent to the machine shop.
Since I had the distributor out I decided to replace the stator on the distributor. The TFI module tested OK.
I tried to fire it up but it would not start. (Had fuel, spark, compression). Timing was OK. I then try to check for any codes. Code reader did not even blink. Their was no clicking sound either. Only thing that I could think of was that I had replaced the stator. I put on another distributor with a used stator and it started right up.
All I can say is try connecting a code reader and see if you can get any codes.
