I have one. Nowhere near as effective as insecticide sprays. However an alternative if you have a reaction to sprays or for use in a food preparation area. They will kill all flying insects but during daylight hours it seems to be random chance. In low light or at night they seem much more usefull.
We've had a couple. They do get some mosquitos, but supposedly a lot of other bugs too. It is fun to listen to the zapping -- especially when a fat old Junebug gets fried.
Don't know how much good they do. Nowadays we use a 'Mosquito Magnet'. It has been a little flaky, but I find a lot of mosquitos in its net. It uses a small dab of ocetenol to attract the little buzzards, and sucks them into a propane oven. The ocetenol is supposedly banned in Califaornia ( along with everything else).
There are other brands that work on the same principle.
They also sell stuff to kill the larvae in standing water. Don't know how effective that is.
However, the best deal here is our government. Since the West Nile stuff, they will come out and treat our ponds etc. This has been the wettest year that I can remember, and it still hasn't been nearly as bad as it used to be. We're in a low area, and none of the other things we tried helped anything like this much.
I dont know much about mosquito killing effectiveness, but if you combine a bug zapper with a case or five of beer, you got redneck entertainment.
a little back Harbor Freight had a tenis raket looking bug killer. but the strings were metal and electrified, but we added a case of beer, and we started shocking ourselves....
Total waste of money and resources imho. Mosquitos nor flies are attracted by light. The few you may get just flew into it by chance. You will kill a lions share of harmless insects but few to almost no harmful ones. If you can have them where you live my vote would be for muscovy ducks. A couple of them can really knock the population down. Those rescue flytraps really put a hurting on flies too.
