What are they ??

For the last 3 years that we have been in this home, there is a strange sighting that I have no answer for ... There is a 30 foot utility pole in the next door neighbors back fence, that has a 1000 watt metal halide flood light on it , located about 75 feet from our privacy fence. It lights up the field in the neighborhood park, that our property borders .. .

Every night while we are in the hot tub , we see these "things" fly around the flood light, like insects. They are too large to be insects and when they fly up to within 3 feet of the light, they "glow" bright yellow like a 100 watt yellow light bulb . They have a flight pattern consistent with hummingbirds, rapid vertical, horizonal, and reverse movements around the light , that are super fast in rate. We never see hummingbirds here after cool weather sets in , yet these things are here all winter , so what are these things, baby aliens ?

Probably bats. They fly in the evening and have an erratic flight pattern, ie they don't fly smoothly like birds.

They are attracted to insects near the light. They glow yellow probably because the light is so bright at that distance. Usually their fur is brown to blackish, but some can be "blond".

They are usually harmless to people and animals, although occasionally some will get diseases and those that are on the ground should be avoided. They are very good for your neighborhod since they catch bugs including mosquitoes and moths.

They are interesting to watch and can sometimes fly close to you, if there are some juicy insects flying around you. I have never had one collide with me or anyone I know.

I would concur with Bats. You can see them all of the time out here and their flight is very unlike a bird due to the rapid change in direction.

The large yellow ones are attracted to warm, bubbling water. They are known to dive under the surface and attack fleshy body parts. They can rip a submerged body appendage to shreds in mear seconds. I'd keep an eye on them if I was you.

Good one V8 ! I hope they have scuba diving tanks strapped on to their backs, it takes a lot longer to find small objects underwater ya know.

Good answers guys. Well, I would hope they are moths , but there will be as many as 10-20 at one time darting around the light. From 75 feet away they look to be at least 6 inches wide. But again, that may be the scuba gear,
