Anybody have any tricks for getting the shaft up into the dizzy hole? I can't seem to even find the hole because I can't see it. Would it be easier to just remove the distributor and drop it in from there?
What are you doing? Sounds like you have to oilpan and pump off. It would help you see it is the distributor was out, but you want to put the shaft in from the bottom and make sure the little metal ring is around it, this prevents the shaft from being pulled out of the pump when the distributor is removed.
Thanks Conanski! I ended up finding the hole by blindly poking and prodding with the new shaft. I'm going to pull the distributor to prime the pump anyway, so I'll make sure everything looks good when I do that. And yes, I was replacing some stuff: HV oil pump, pickup tube, pan gasket, rear main seal, main bearings, and rod bearings. And now I have a whole new problem...when I lowered the motor back onto the mounts it settled a little to one side, so it's tilted in the mounts. Got any suggestions for getting the motor centered in the mounts? In the mean-time I'll be searching old posts to see if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to fix it.
Yeah, I had that problem. You just got to lift it back up and move it into place.
Use a rubberband to hold the pump shaft in place while you install the pump. Just a trick I use that I saw on this forum.
