Cool distributor

help I can't get my distributor back in the hole. I have tried every thing even turning over the motor. It will engage in the cam but will not go onto the oil pump shaft. there is no visible damage to the distributor

if it is the same dist. that came out of the engine, keep turning!
sometimes they are a pain to get back in.
unhook the coil and get a freind to bump the engine, sometimes it needs to rock a little to get it back in.

Cool distributor putter inner tool

help, I can't get my dist. back in its hole. I pulled it out to move it one tooth and can't get the stupid thing back in. There is no visible damage to it but it won't engage the oil pump shaft. It will however engage the cam gear.I've tried turning over the motor while holding down on it but it just won't fall. This sucks I just finished rebuilding it and only got to run it for about a week!

try tapping the engine over without holding on to it.

The pump shaft is a Hex. When you took the dist out, it lined up with that Hex. When you move it one tooth, it no longer lines up with that Hex. Just turn the motor slowly until it lines up and drops in place, keeping it engaged with the cam gear as you do it. Check the TDC afterwards.

I always move the engine around with a breaker bar. Bumping the starter is too erratic. Set the engine at TDC compression for #1. Position the distributor so the rotor will point the right way when it drops. move the engine slowly back and forth until it drops in. Very easy to do

I just put a 5/16" socket on a real long extension, drop it onto the oil shaft and turn it ever so slightly, after a few tries I can drop the dizzy right in.

P.S. make sure the cap hold down clips are not under the dizzy holding it up and keeping it from dropping.

thanks for the help guys but it wasn't the prob. my oil pump shaft had pulled out of the pump. All I had to do was pull the shaft out and attach it to the distributor with some windshield tape so it wouldn't fall when I put it back in. Works fine now

it's not supposed to be able to come out. it should have a spring washer on the shaft near the top, but under the block hole where you can see the top of the shaft. the shaft has to be installed from the bottom when the retainer is on the shaft correctly.
