My gas mileage

My gas mileage
Kind of in a hurry so if there was another thread that concerned it, sorry.
The 1960 f100 I picked up gets terrible mileage; about 10 . Sadly it has a 223 1bbl and gets that . I replaced the air filter and made sure it wasn't running rich and all that.
Anyhow, I'm puzzled as to why the mpg is that bad; only thing i can figure is that its old and i gotta live with it. Any suggestions to help me with my mpg?
Thanks.

not to sound like a smart a-- but what were you expecting ?? my 53 with a flatty 8 and three gear and 32's only gets 'tween 8.5-10 at best . these are old trucks designed to work hard . no overdrives , low gears etc. like new ones . but to put it in a better perspective for you , my cuz bobby has a 98 dodge heavy half that has a 360 and od etc. , all the modern advantages , is kept up , and he only gets 10 in town and maybe 14 on the road . change the tranny to an od unit , maybe lower numerically gears , which is gonna kill it's oooomph off the line , consider the things ross said , real good thorough tune-up , but i wouldnt expect miracles as like i said they are old technology .

This is a copy of my reply from a similar thread, hope it helps:
I have a 64 Econoline (C4 auto and 3.00 9" rear) that I put Ford 302 crate motor with 320HP in it. With a Holley 650cfm or an Eldebrock 500cfm carb it got 10-15 MPG no matter how careful I was with the gas pedal. After that I put an EFI system on it. Now I get 17-20 MPG.

I just took a trip which was about 340 miles total about 95% open highway. The truck is a 56 F100 that sets about 4 inches to the bottom of the front fenders has a 1971 351W, stock heads, performer cam, intake manifold and edelbrock 600 cfm carb, MSD ign, dual exhaust, 1970 9 inch with 3:50 gears , AOD trans , and P235/70R15 rear tires Forgot the o/d. Ran the truck at 2000 RPM most of the way (should have been 70 mph speedo doesn't want to work correctly))
Fuel mileage was approx 13.84 mpg ( got distance off of Rand McNally so I know it's not correct but I would believe close enough for a good guess) not very impressive but it still was better than my 60's thru 80's p/u when they were new (yes I am that old, got my license in 1957)
No matter what the mileage is it is a blast to drive so maybe I should shut up and put more gas in it.

An EFI setup would improve your mileage but is it worth the cost? You can buy a lot of gas for the money you would spend on the EFI conversion. I made the switch to improve the drivability. The Econoline would pull the front wheels off the ground with the Holley 650 but the engine did not want to start cold or run in stop and go traffic. I learned a lot from building that Econoline. My 55 F100 will get a 5.0 EFI/AOD setup. The doner car for this project was a 86 Cougar so the costs were reasonable.

my dad said after he did a valve job in his 56' f100 panel with a 4 speed granny gear, stock 3.92 rear and the stock 223(YEAH, THAT SAME ONE I'M WORKIN ON NOW!!!) he said it went from 9-10 mpg to 17-18 mpg. But he said that was he thinks it was, whether thats accurate, I don't know. Good luck.
P.s. you should be getting at least 15 in a good running but maybe not rebuilt engine.

I had a '53 F-100, bone stock with 223 and 3-sp, in the early '70's. It was in very good shape, a daily driver with maybe 75,000 miles. During the Oil Embargo it was a matter of great concern what mileage I was getting. It was consistently 14 - 15 in suburban driving, never more than 17 on the road (at 55 mph back then).
