I chase that elusive beast all the time(better mileage) catch up every now and then. My 4.9 gets anywhere from 9 to 14 mpg. I've even managed to get 16.9 one week and damn near fell over. There is no rhyme or reason that I can see for the fluctuation of my mileage. It's never the same week to week. The only two things I haven't replaced are the MAP, and the ACT sensors.
I see a lot of 300 MPG complaints here. All my life I was taught that 6's get better mpg than 8's. Not so in these fords though. My 5.0 gets a little over 17 since I upgraded to the MSD Cap, Rotor and Coil and put on the 9mm wires from Ford Racing. And....routed them correctly to eliminate the slight miss.
Not trying to rub salt in your wounds here...I wish I had a solution for you. I think the best you can do is keep it tuned and running in top shape. Make sure you don't have any codes and check your 02 sensor(s)......they can affect mpg.
On the plus side.......your low end torque would probly pull my 5.0 backward in a tug-of-war.
The 300 will drink gas if you rev it, keep it under 3000rpm, that's where all the power is anyway. Of course it has to be in correct operating condition as well, check the codes and fix anything found.
Hehehe...I have the same problem on my '95 F150 I6. Elusive miss, usually at idle and an exhaust leak at the manifold at cylinder #3.
Cleared codes by installing new ICU and O2 sensor. Changed wires and distributor/rotor, spark plugs, and installed a new TPS. Also gave it a Sea Foam treatment (through brake vacuum line, and half a can into the tank) and installed a K&N dropin air filter. The idle now has calmed down quite a bit in comparison on how it ran before. The miss is still there, but not as bad...if that makes any sense.
I still only getting 12 to 13mpg. But then again, I rarely drive more than 5 miles before parking again...meaning I probably don't even get it up to operating temperature. At some point I figure, I'm just throwing money at it without changing much :P
