Im workin on a 429 for a 78 F-250 4x4. I got everything back from the machine shop and Im in the middle of the assembly process. When I bought the motor it was a bare block with heads and an off-brand engine kit. (The previous owner started the project and gave up) Any way this setup came with a factory 4x4 oil pan for a 460. It is stamped F7TE. I bought a Melling oil pump M84DHV and oil screen 84DS2. I got the pump and screen mounted on my block and the oil pan doesnt fit. Where did I go wrong? The oil screen seems to sit too low and the oil pan is about a half inch from the block. Is the oil pan too shallow or is the oil screen too deep? Do I get a different oil screen or deeper oil pan?

Before all the aftermarket companies showed up...offering this and that, we parts guys at dealerships used to sell ppl the 1975/86 Econoline 460 oil pan to use on 1960's/70's F100/350's when converting to 429/460's with/without 4WD.
The Econoline 460's have a reverse sump oil pan.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you can use the 1980's F Series 460 oil pan on 1979 or earlier F100/350's because of clearance issues.
The E7TE ID number translates to E7TZ-6675-A F Series truck 460 oil pan with/without 4WD used 1982/89 (E7TZ-6675-A replaced the 1982 p/n of: E2TZ-6675-B).
The oil screen and pump I ordered are for an E-350. I knew the vans had rear sumps. According to Advance Auto's website the oil screen cross references F series up to '97. So my question is...how many quarts is my oil pan? 5...6? If its a 6 quart do I need to get a 7 quart?
what is the pickup tube meant for? is it for a stock pan application or aftermarket application?
the truck oil pans are not the same as the van oil pans. the van oil pans are more of a mid sump pan while the truck pans are more or a rear sump design. i also
I think the truck pans are deeper then the van pans. so if the pickup tube is for a truck pan then you will need to get the pan from a truck.
the best way to avoid this is to get the pickup tube and pan as a set, then you know they are compatible. you can get the oil pan and tube off either ebay for around $150 - 175 or at you local Ford dealer for around the same price.
The Melling oil pump #M84DHV
The Melling oil screen #84DS2
Both of these cross reference all E-series and F-series 4x4's.
Now, that oil pan on the summit ad looks just like the one I got but the pickup looks way different. Is there any way to figure out what part number that pickup is in the ad?
Hmmm I got my PN's from Advances website and now I just did some investigating on the Melling website. They even have a Q&A for Ford trucks with a rear sump. I guess Im not the first one with this issue. Looks like Ive got the 'long' oil pump pickup. I hate it when its too long.lol PN 84DS1 is the short one and that must go with the stock 6qt pan. Im guessing the long pickup goes with a 7qt pan?
