I want to upgrade the sound in my 1999 Explorer (with Premium Sound). My only complaint with the factory system is that it is very muddy. Hopefully, I can gain a lot just by replacing the speakers with four good quality 2-ways. Does anyone have a recommendation? Also, how the heck do the door panels come off?
About speakres, I went with pioneer speakers FROM WALLMART. They were cheaper at wallmart, and I assume they have the same quality as from a web-site. How are you haveing trouble getting the door panels off? What I remember was simply removing every screw in sight, then using a tool which looked kinda like the end of a crow-bar to pop off all the clips holding the panel in place.
LAST EDITED ON 18-Jul-01 AT 12:03 PM (EST)[p]I had the same muddy sound on my 94 Explorer. I purchased the JBL SUB for it from Ebay, scrapped the stock amp and installed an MTX amp that I had laying around.
I installed 2 Infinity Kappa speakers in the front doors. I actually purchased 4. Crutchfield had them on sale. I think I paid $50 for a pair. It might have been $100 for a pair. I don't remember. I havent installed the two in the rear doors yet.
The increase sound quality was immediately apparent. The Infinity speakers have much better clarity. I no longer have to run my treble at max.
