I'm helping a friend do an amp/sub install in his 1997 Explorer XLT... Anyone who has done this before, please help! I need to know the best place and method to run 4 AWG wire through the firewall, and back to the cargo area... Also, if you know how to remove the stock radio, that would help... Thanks so much for any help you can give me!
Lance,
I currently have a 2000 F150 4x4 ext. cab with a kickin' sound system. I install a lot of systems for people I know and use to do it as a small business on the side. I'm running a sony black matrix cd player, sony door speakers, a 1100 watt sony mobile es 5 channel amp and a jl audio 10w6 sub. I had to run a 1 gauge wire through the fire wall, then split it into two 4 gauge wires. There should be a unused rubber grommet in the fire wall aroung the steering column area. Cut a x in the center of the grommet and run it through there. It is best to hide the wire under the carpet as close to the transmission tunnel as possible. You will have to remove the seats to do this but is the best way for a clean professional looking install. Make sure you zip tie the power wire along the wire harness under the hood to help keep it in place. Good luck!
Please don't run the power throught the fire wall if you pull on the panels around the edge of the carpet on the driver side you will see that just in fron of the seat and beneath the carpet is a rubber grommet that can be removed this is the easiest access point to run the power.
