OT- diesel tractor question

A good friend of mine has a 67 John Deere tractor with a big straight diesel in it. Anyway, this past March it started pouring black smoke when he put it in gear and would almost die when he let out clutch. He was thinking a bearing or bearings were going bad or were already bad. I told him I'd ask on here because y'all seem to know most everything about diesels.

Thanks!

i think you're looking for some sort of exhaust leak or intake block.
Black smoke means you arent getting enough air for the fuel.
Is the turbo working? doesnt sound like it is if it just started.
Ask him if he's made any injector modifications. could be a blooper there.
the only other thing i could think of would be oil getting into the chamber. that could be really bad if that's the problem. good luck, and hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come by.

67 John Deere? What model is it?

I'm going to assume your talking about the 404ci.

Is it a powershift or is it a syncro?

I'll be out there tomorrow and get those answers, On another note I cut hay all day yesterday on a Ford 6600 diesel that is a 78 or 79 model I think. Man that thing runs strong and great. The other man I was cutting with had the better tractor though. A 2005 John Deere, O think a 75 horsepower diesel with enclosed cab, air, CD etc. He is an older man (67) and he deserves the better tractor. Although, I think that old Ford would run forever aw he said it has cut thousands of acres in it's time.

Sounds like air starvation. First thing to do is to pull the air filter and check it to make sure it's not stopped up (dirt, bird or rat nest, etc. "seen a few of these"). Then check to make sure it's open from the air filter housing to the intake (no collapsed hoses or bent air tubes stopping the air flow.)

I have a 1976 Ford 9700 open station (143 hp) that still runs as good as it did when it was new. But I do like John Deere for the wet sleeved engines, you can do an inframe rebuild on them.

Our '78 JD 2130 was acting similar turns out the screen on the lift pump was clogged. I know that sounds backwards, clogged screen= less fuel=less smoke. But when It was clogged the tractor would smoke pretty bad and the fumes would burn your eyes to the point it was almost unbearable to drive it. Cleaned the screen now it only smokes when it is supposed to and no more burning eyes.

I've even seen massive a massive bird nest in the stack/turbo housing that would not cause it to light up.

Ditto on the filters. Just because the filter looks ok doesn't mean the passage is.

Glad to see ya again plowhand.

Thanks, been across the pond on uncle's dollar for awhile. Good to be back where it's green and you can find some shade.

Yeah, LP's were pretty common back in the day. However, I wouldn't feel to confident operating one of those. They did have more power stock though.
