Has anybody ever seen or heard of a 300 6 gas block being used for a diesel engine. There was a older man that lived down the road from me and he had made remark that he was fixing to start re-working a 300 6 in one of his work trucks to a diesel. My extreme curiosity was de-railed when another old timer came by and the conversation went to racing old Indian motor cycles, modal A and T cars and trucks and the such. Anyway he passed away not to long after that. The only thing I do remember is that he mentioned using parts off a Commander 6000 Ford farm tractor to make this work be he said it would. I grew up around these old timers. They pulled trucks or tractors and raced anything with wheels. I could write a book on the things these guys did. Somethings worked somethings didn't but in those days there were no after market stores. If you thought it might work you tried it.
I don't know if it could work or not, but would I LOVE to believe it would!!! I've often thought the 300 would be a great engine to do a conversion on, me and a cousin of mine spent hours searching the net in hopes we would find something to do just that. I guarantee you I will look into it, 300's are a dime a dozen, and are one of the best/most durable gasoline engines ever built, a little re-working and they could be a true blue blooded Ford diesel engine. It makes me drool to think about a true Ford diesel that would bolt in a half-ton and up to a standard 4/5 spd Ford transmission, what I wouldn't give!!!!!!
He mentioned the Commander 6000 Ford tractor. Start there. I haven't had a chance to look at one real close. I don't know anybody anymore that has one. He and two. It would be neat, wouldn't it. Happy Thanksgiving.
Well, I am no ag. tractor expert, but I think the Commander 6000 did have a 6 cylinder diesel in it. I am almost certain that it was not a version of the Ford 240/300 in-line 6 gas engine though. I can't imagine that it would be possible to turn a 300 into a diesel using tractor parts (but never underestimate the ability of an old geezer). In fact, it is not possible to turn an Olds gas 350 into a diesel 350 (though 350 diesel blocks have been used to build gas 350's for racing). I remember hearing back around '79 that Ford was working on a diesel version of the 300, but it never happened. The story was the 300 block and bottom end wasn't strong enough. Luckily for Ford, International had desgined the 6.9L diesel, but didn't have enough money to tool it up for production. Ford paid International to set up the plant, and got the 6.9L as a result.
