Inner Thrust Washer part #
I have a 2001 F250 5.4L super duty 4x4 that I am replacing ball joints on.
I completed passenger side and pulled driver side to discover that either the large gray plastic inner thrust washer is missing or was destroyed. (there is a bunch of particle dust between back seal and axle bearing - appears something was there) I am second owner of truck. Driver side is missing the studs and was simply bolted so I know someone has had it apart before. Wondering if they made there own 'inner thrust washer' maybe?
Can I find this at a local parts shop? What is Ford part number on this item?
If it was destroyed is there something else I should be looking at while having this apart? I am putting upper and lower ball joints, universal joints, shocks, brakes, axle bearing while I have all this apart.
I was having a slight clunking sound when I turned hard left or right turns. ANd when I put it in 4wd and was on pavement it was almost impossible to turn while in 4wd prior to working on the truck.
Thanks for the help!
John
I already picked the part up this morning.
For those of you reading this post the Ford part# for the Plastic washer is F81Z4228BA.
It would be my suggestion to check ahead with your local Ford dealer to see if they have in stock before you start the Ball joint job. On removing the large rear seal the 'mechanic' who worked on it last time beat the snot out of installing it and dinged it all up which ate upper this plastic washer.
You might check ahead for studs and nuts for the knuckle for safety sake. They replaces mine on drivers side with bolts instead and they are not instock. SO I am putting it back together for now with the bolts.
Studs- F81Z1107AA
Nut for stud- F81Z1120AA
God Bless,

I found my instructions to do the ball joints here and they showed a tool like that in the step by step instructions.
Ball Joint Replacement Write-Up For 2000 Ford F250 Superduty
I made a tool from 1 1/4 pipe. I thought I had a flange coupling like that here at the machine shop, but was wrong. So I took a 1 1/4 coupler and mig welded it to a scrap piece of round stock and turn od to fit the seal and then used a 5 lb hand sledge holding u joint in a vise to seat the seal.
Thanks!
John
BTW, the tool I showed you was not my idea. It goes back to a 2005 ball joint replacement guide here on this forum ....

Good luck with your truck.
