I popped my hood open on my 99 expy and now it won't close. I have lubed it with wd40 to no avail. I would like to remove it and clean it before I purchase another one. Does anybody have the steps to remove it?
Well, nobody responded, but I went ahead and tried it. I thought I would do a write-up for the next person. This is what I did. Keep in mind that if I did it, anybody can!
The latch has two springs. If you stand in front of the truck and look at the latch you will notice that there are two springs, one in front of the latch, and one in the rear of it. In my case, one of them was so rusted that it broke and it was the one that pulls the cable. Without this spring it will remain in the open position. You can tell if this is what happenned to you because the spring will be hanging in the rear of the latch.
1) I removed the big plastic part that covers the front section under the hood.
2) There are two screws that you need to remove, to remove the latch.
3) take the spring to home depot and get one the same size and replace (they sell a package of 4 for about four dollars)
4) replace the screws and test. Make sure to test it. I was afraid that it might lock and not reopen. Could be my inexperience though,
Yes, that's exactly what you do. And did we have fun removing and reinstalling that big plastic part? I broke half the mounting plastic push pins for lack of a better term. I don't think they like to be removed once installed. FYI - the stealership wants $35+ for the hood latch. They do not sell the spring separately. I replaced my spring at the local hardware store who also carries replacement push pins. It's been good for more than a year now.
