Hi guys, the factory alarm on our '98 EB 4x4 Expy is going nuts. The key fob does not work, so last night I pushed the lock button on the door and closed it to lock it. This morning, I opened it using the key, not the fob, and the alarm went off (don't know if this is normal or not). So, I bought a new battery for the key fob and tried to turn off the alarm with the fob, but it still does not work. My only option to get the alarm to stop is by disconnecting the car battery. Now, the expy starts up fine and I can drive it, but the alarm still keeps blaring. Any help or suggestions? Is there a way that I can bypass the alarm? Or manually shut it off, or get it to turn off so I can get to work w/o the alarm blaring the whole way? Thanks for the help in advance!
If I remember my 99, the fuse panel is at the bottom of the driver's side A-pillar behind a little door in the side of the dash. The owners manual should tell you which one it is.
Ok I found my owner's manual and it says that the PATS fuse is also for the Generic Electronic Module. After I searched what GEM is, I found out that it:
The generic electronic module (GEM) constantly monitors its subsystems for concerns. If a concern is found in one of the subsystems, the GEM will record the concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
The ignition switch position is very important to the GEM function. Often times, erratic or unexpected GEM function can be traced to problems with these GEM inputs.
The GEM controls the following features:
Wipers/washers (front/rear).
Warning chimes.
Battery saver.
Illuminated entry and courtesy lamps.
Driver power window.
Accessory delay.
4-wheel drive.
Heated backlite/mirror.
I don't know what all this exactly means, but if I do disconnect this fuse, will it lead to more problems? Will it cause damage to the engine or ecu? Is this harmful or is there any risk or danger involved? Thanks again!
Why don't you call the service dept and tell them you'd love to bring the car in for them to repair this problem but can't drive it with the alarm going off, and ask if there is a "limp home" procedure that will let you drive it. Whether you actually bring it to them is another story.
