V8 perches?
I've searched the site for answers and have come up empty....
I'm going to be swapping out my 245,000mile I-6 for a 331 motor. It's a stroker out of my 93 Mustang, it has GT40 iron heads(milled), Trickflow stage 1 cam, Crane 1.6 rockers,Comp cams pushrods, Ford racing lifters, and Crane stud conversion. The mustang will eventually get a 351 w. All I have in the garage right now is a 73 351c that needs a major rebuild. I need to get rid of this engine....
I'm planning on buying long tube headers(like the mustang), a 2121 edelbrock manifold and a 600 cfm carb(1406). I don't use the truck at all for towing/pulling and I'm looking for much better acceleration and highway speeds. The 6 is killing me going up that steep ramp to the highway everyday. My 331 is very strong, gets great mileage, and was built about 4 yrs ago. Thing is, I have no idea what to do about the mount perches.... They are removable as they have four bolts holding them to the crossmemeber, so I don't think there's any grinding involved. This F150 is an 86 with a 4 spd manual.
Anyway, is there a source to get the V8 perches or do I have to raid junk yards?
I'm planning on pulling the 4 core radiator from the stang as well as the MSD ignition. The rad should pose little problem in mounting as it is 31" in length and the trucks is 33".
I have the flywheel which is 164 teeth, as opossed to the 157 or so from the mustang. I'm even keeping the serpentine setup with the power steering pulley swap and a 95 mustang alt. 130amp...
Is there anything else I'm missing? besides the obvious exhaust change?
Thanks and sorry for the long post!
Don't forget you will need a oil pan. I have heard the mustang double sump will fit, but you can't hardly get to the front drain plug in the truck. You will also need to buy a little electric fuel pump, or change the front of the engine over to let a mechanical fuel pump fit, since your mustang engine was fuel injected.
that double sump won't be a pain either, a friend of mine with an 83 has this setup and it works well(with a notch). Here's an update though, I'm not going carb after all... With what it costs to buy a new manifold, gaskets, throttle linkage, air cleaner, and carb, I can get the Painless 5.0L EFI harness and keep the mustang intake/injector setup! I'll just need an inline fuel pump(which I would need for the carb too-same price) and I need to change the rubber fuel lines to some fuel injection lines for the psi increase..
That harness is $499 so far online. This project should kick off in the beginning of august so I'll post some pics of before and after!
