I've been looking into upgrading my 23 year old 5 1/4 pioneer front speakers to go with my decent rear 6x9's.
Being partial to Alpine components, the speaker that I have found that looks good to me is the SPR-135A 5 1/4 component speaker. I don't want to put in 6 1/2, as cutting up the door looks to be required. Am I right?
Peak - 180W
RMS - 50W
Freq Response - 40hz-35Khz
As well, I am looking into adding an amp to improve sound quality and power. I've looked into the Alpine V-power MRP-F200.
Max Power - 75W x 4 (4 ohms)
RMS Power - 40W x 4 (4 ohms)@ 14.4v
- 50W x 4 (2 ohms)@ 14.4v
Are these components going to work well and produce good quality sound?
Note- I have an Alpine 7827 25W MAX cd player and the rear Sony 6x9's are 140W/40W 3 ways.
Any opinions, insights? More info needed?
Thanks,
Matt
The setup looks good to me, however I am a litle confused by your first paragraph.
Why on earth are you afraid of cutting the doors to accomodate bigger speakers?? One would thing a guy with the username "WELDman" would feel pretty comfortable making modifications to metal parts.
I would try to get the bigger speakers in there, because the active cone area in a 6.5" speaker is around 33 square inches, while a 5 1/4 inch cone only has around 21.5 square inches. You get over 50% more speaker by moving up to the 6 1/2's. Just something to think about.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-01 AT 02:11 PM (EST)]Good recommendation, but all is not what it seems!
The name weldman comes from the Weld Racing rims on my '78!
If I had a heated shop (will be putting these things in in the middle of December) let alone knew how to weld, I would put in the 6.5's!
Ok, so I am intrigued, what is the best way to fit the 6.5's in there, just cut the whole bigger and don't worry about recreating the recessed portion that the original 5 1/4's fit into?
Another question, when you guys have put in better door speakers in the 73-79's, have you cut up the door panel and installed the speaker grille, instead of just putting the door panel over top, which looks like it would obstruct sound quite a bit?
Matt
Edit - Crutchfield says that 6.5's are stock.....anyone agree/disagree?
The 6.5's fit right in the doors on my 79 bronco (might have to drill new mounting holes) . I wouldn't put 6x9's in the back though . Put some truck boxes ith 8" woofers and top firing tweeters behind the seat , you'll be much happier . Even the cheap behind the seat boxes sound better than a 6x9 .
also , cutting the door panel depends on how you use the truck . the slots in the door panel point towards the floor , so if if you cut the panel you will lose allot of sound quality . I didn't cut my panels because when I'am wheeling I get allot of water in the cab and the panels will keep them dry .
I also advise that you buy the ceap plastic covers that go over the inside (back) of the speakers to protect them from water .
