Sound system q:

Ok so some people buy new cars every six months. i buy new cd players. I'm looking @ two diff alpine decks to replace my current deck, the CDA 9886 and the CDA 9884. the price diff. is 300 for the 86 and 200 for the 84. main diff's: the 86 comes w a remote, ipod cord, usb usability and the amp pre outs are 4v. the 84 has just the ipod cable and 2v pre outs. both have exelent reviews, and both look to be high quality (note: i'm goning by what crutchfield says. from what i've heard they're pretty bomb).

what i'm running right now:

Alpine MRP-F240 4ch amp

Phoenix gold onctain r zrated component speakers running off ch. 1&2 (l and r) of the amp. rms = 70 watts

Pioneer custom 4 way speakers rms = 80w
runnin off ch. 3/4

PG octain r 5.25's in the hatch, also runnin off ch 3/4. rms = 50w

then an audiobahn A4002T 2 ch amp, pushin two pg octain r 10d subs wired @ 2ohms off each channel.

so that's three pairs of RCA's for two amps.

all the wiring i'm using is 16g, minus the rear hatch wiring, which is factory. the 6x9's only sound good in sealed environments, but in the aero they put out too much trebal and not enough bass. so i'm thinking of buying some 6x9 ---> 6.5 / 5.25 adaptors (Universal 6"x9" to 5-1/4" or 6-1/2" Brackets Speaker adapter plates at Crutchfield.com) and installing another set of component speakers there, and perhaps down the road create a custom box setup for the 6.5's. the ones i have in my doors (which aren't even suposed to be there, mind you) make crazy good sounding bass. and the 5.25's in the hatch actualy sound very clean and do add to the sound quite nicely.

So what do you guys think? if you can't tell, i'm trying (still) to get away from the loud booming all bass sound systems.

DCRB-----I'm not allowed to buy those kinds of things. Something about being married, having kids, 2 cats and a dog kinda gets in the way and not to mention the mortgage. I'm a Jet Engine Mechanic brother, mostly going on 20 years and of all the tech manuals, schematics and training I've inflicked myself on I've never seen such a well thought out question in all of my days. Older guys type words like these when their left scratching their heads with wonderment and amazement.

I'm 42-guess what my answer is. Buy tinted windows and crank your system with a factory cassette followed up with the factory power booster.

The tinted windows will keep them guessing because you'll have the cassette adapter in the radio attached to your personnel cd player.

Yep--cruising up hwy 10 going to my favorite junk yard in Pensacola. I reach down towards the passenger floorboard, open my cooler and get an ice covered A&W rootbeer. As I pop the top, take two shots of it and place it in my multi-faceted center counsel, I TOO sometimes ponder the affects of a Superior system such as you have described. Then I soon realize I'm of the age that cruising with my radio up constitutes looking for women and that my dear boy just doesn't sit well with my wifey of 20 years.

Sure would be nice though---you know---reaching out so to speak to getting rediscovered. REDISCOVERED that is until I find my wife's 20 pound change purse rap me on the temple giving me a near death experience.

DCRB--I say go for it! I'll live my second childhood through your many experiences. ALL HAIL DCRB--the LORD of the ROAD-I SALUTE you.

ps-I'm not trying to be a bad weisenhiemer-work has sucked all week-no time for lunches and I thought that these silly words would be a great escape for me. I just took a shot of Nyquil since I've been sick and sneezing the last couple of days. I hope I wake up in the morning? Just playing. I'll probably have the stereo god's chasing me in my sleep tonight for being a smart a$$.

man i tell you what you just made my night. My week's been pretty crazy, and between you and lary the cable guy's git er done dvd i've been laughin up a storm! lol the way i see it is this: the second i find out my wife or g/f is pregnant (hopefully she'll be my wife before she's pregnant, knock on wood and pray to whomever) i'm taking the fancy loud stereo out, and placin a stock one right on in. i took one year of sign language in high school for a second language class, and i found out (even though i already figured it) that loud soundsystems damage kid's ears, and thats just cruel for me to do to an innocent child. i'll wait for them to do it to them selves!

but yeah i was just wonderin what's the diff. between 2v pre amps vs. 4v's. lol

DCRB, asking guys which radio they like better between similiar models of the same brand, is like asking us which shirt looks better on you.

Those are just one of those decisions that you have to make yourself. We can kind of help guide you, but I think the lack of responses is because we don't want to make the decision 'for you' and you comming back and yelling at us. (Remember, most of us have been married for a while.)

My best suggestion would be compare the features of them, and which ones you will be using the most, and go from there.

Stereo systems are mostly a matter of personal taste, but I can answer one technical question.

Most amplifiers are rated at 1V rms input to reach full output power. Check the specs for one you will be buying to see what its sensitivity rating is. If it's like the standard (1v to full power), then it doesn't matter which head unit you get, as long as it can put out 1v rms. Any more than that will overdrive the amplifier into clipping.

Having said that, I think the head unit that can put out a higher output voltage can probably work better at the lower voltages. At "normal" levels, it will probably respond more linearly and have less distortion.

No apologies needed. I just noticed that this thread did not have much for replies and I did not want you to feel like we were ignoring you, but you were just asking one of those Darn if we do, Darn if we don't questions. After you spend alot of time around women, you get use to those type of questions and try to avoid them.
