I have a 2005 f350 Dually which I had a lot of problems with in the past. It seems to be doing pretty good now for the last 15k miles but I am thinking of the long term use of it.
If I go back to having problems I am thinking of options. I only have 35k miles on it now and don't drive it much now unless I need the power it has for towing.
Has anyone replaced the 6.0 with a new or near new 7.3?
I think it would probably be easier to sell your 05 and buy an older one with a 7.3 IF thats what you want. Or throw a cummins into your 05.
What problems have you had?
Blown engine at 8k then mostly turbo problems with the new engine. They replaced numerous turbos on it. Stranded me about 4 times in remote locations. Eventually Ford made a cash and keep deal and still honor the warranty. It seems to be pretty good now except for the occasional turbo rattle when I back off. I can pretty much avoid it with throttle feathering. I like all the features that it has that the 02 didn't. Like the shorter turn radius and the transmission. Two of the reasons I went to the new one back then.
I am just looking at long term alternatives because I like all of it except the turbo setup.
Im sure if the turbo is your main problem, you could even get an aftermarket turbo to solve the problem.
The 7.3 is a great engine and all, bu to swap one into your truck you would need the motor tranny and lots of wiring. Nothings impossible, but man she would be some work!

If that is truly the limit of your problem is that of the turbo, then I would go to an aftermarket setup as that would in the long run be cheaper then most of your conversations or maybe even cheaper then a used 7.3 unless it was one of the really early ones or a very high mileage one.
Tex, what did your turbo cost? Are you hapy with it?
It was around 2500 for everything. Matt and I installed it when I was up there for a vacation over in Asheville. I am very pleased with it. It helped clean up alot of the smoke I was getting from those modified injectors and I can actually yoke the benefit of those injectors now. My egt's run cooler towing the horses, trees, or whatever I happen to have on the trailer on a few 3-5% grade of hills(it pretty much stays at 1100 on the pyro with about 7lbs of boost going 60 with anythere from 7k to 15.5k on the trailer). If anybody wants a turbo for towing I would recommend this one in a heart beat, couple that with the stage 1 tow injectors I have more low end grunt(mainly with the help from the injectors, but the turbo helps efficiently use that fuel) and that is perfect for my towing needs.

I can practically see his wallet shrinking now(but he'll have fun with his truck though).
If you figure roughly $12000 for a Cummins swap, there is a ton that you can do to the 6L Powerstroke to make it last a long time. I'm not sure how much a 7.3L swap would be, but I've had a 7.3L and I would never consider it bulletproof and I would never want to give up the 6L to go back to it.
I think an aftermarket turbo combined with ARP headstuds and an EGR delete would do wonders for the longevity of your truck!
I thought I had read somewhere that you could put a newer engine into an older vehicle but not an older engine into a newer vehicle. I think it had something to do with emissions equipment on the older one not meeting newer specs but I really don't recall all the details. It might be something to check on before getting started on a high dollar project...
