Is there any way to fix all the issues that the 6.0 has. I love the truck but at this point i am afraid to drive it long distances. The 6.0 is a far cry from the 7.3, i bought the new motor thinking that it would be a new era in the diesel game. i was on a train headed for destruction, or so it seems. Though people tell me that i should be able to replace parts that have been updated, changed out, or even recalled, i am unaware of which parts these are. So far at only 146000k on the truck i have had to replace the fuel pump egr valve, the ipr valve twice, the dummy plugs in the pass side valve cover, and the hpop. These parts have been replaced by my self, and it seems that every time i fix a problem, i'm back under the hood tearing apart the motor again.
At this point i really just want to find a way to get the reliability out of this motor i need, or replace it with a 7.3. If there is a way to get the power and reliability out of a 6.0 that the 7.3 delivered some one please let me know.
Get arp head studs, an upgraded egr cooler, and you might as well get a new OEM or upgraded oil cooler while you're replacing the egr. As for the other common things that go wrong i.e. injectors, turbo, hpop, etc. you are just rolling the dice on whether or not that stuff happens. But frequent oil and fuel filter changes will of course decrease the chance of failure.
Is this a used vehicle that you "bought the new engine" for ????
I would suggest you find a trustworthy, knowledgeable mechanic to fix the root causes and go from there....
My two 6.0's have been reliable, but I am the first owner on both....
and the wife uses the 05 as a daily driver 42 miles to work each way and then we hop in it to go everywhere.... the lil car sits in the third garage and just discharges it's battery
if you install a bulletproof egr/oil cooler relocation kit, change oil at 3 k and run some rev-x every other oilchange the truck should be a very dependable truck.i have a lot of guys running this setup and have 0 issues with there trucks.the egt temps are 200-400 degrees cooler and there oil temp runs 45-75 degrees cooler.this means better life for the engine and injectors.
Coolant filter is cheap, and fun to build yourself, did you change the stc fitting when you changed the hpop? Jack up the fuel pressure, get a guage, (don't run it out of fuel and try and make it home like I did), use fuel conditioner and cetane, clean the egr regularly, have good batteries and charging system, get the latest flash, don't baby it, drive it so the turbo doesn't gum up...
I lve in oil and gas and farming/ranching country, lots of trucks used around here, and a few years back I would see a lot of 6.0's coming to town on a hook, now I hardly ever see one, and there's still lots of them around, so I guess they're getting better as everybody learns more about them. Now it seems to be pretty much equal amongst all makes who gets towed home.
