Hey guys, I am having some issues with my truck. It seems like the front axle is not engaging. The transfer case engages and the front driveshaft spins but the front tires just dont pull. The truck is a 1991 Ford F-250 XLT Lariat 460, 5-speed 4x4 with auto front lockers. What could be my problem?
auto hubs + a 460 = BOOM sounds like the front hub or hubs are blown. You can have some one look at your axle shafts to see if they turn when the rear tires spin.
have you checked the vacuum lines to the hubs? I faught this problem on my 96 ranger several times. They could also be broken. My 4.0 would break them on command. Ford factory auto hubs for TTBs are the most worthless piece of chit ever built. The second most worthless piece of chit ever built is the TTB setup so I guess you can say they go hand in hand.
Check the lines and if they are connected and unclogged pull the hubs to see if they are broken. Then....
Do yourself a favor and swap in some warn manual locking hubs for your truck. They are a little more $$ than normal warn locking hubs but you wont have any issues.
I dont think there are any vacuum lines to the hubs....should there be? The only line coming from the axle at all looks to be some kind of vent tube that runs into the engine bay but I think it might be kinda big....I will check to see if the axle shafts are turning or not. Thanks for the input guys!
On a 91, no vacuum lines, just the crappy auto locking hubs that need to have a good spin to make them engage. If they aren't serviced often, they stick and break. As everyone else said, dump them and get a set of Warn premiums. I run the standards on my mud truck to make them the fusable link to save shafts, but for the normal guy, get the premiums!!
kris, you are thinking of the superduty's man... before 1999 in the heavy trucks there were no vacuum (AFAIK) lines to the hubs!
the front 'lockers' or as we say in the offroad world 'hubs' is your problem. go to advance auto and order a set of either warn or milemarker premiums! yes you will have to climb out of the truck to lock in 4x4 but its a small price to pay!
or you could do one better and NEVER worry about hub breakge as well as NEVER get out of the truck again...
drive slugs or drive flanges. they are 100% reliable and never break as they are solid steel. problem is they are always locked in and you are always in 4wd!
And if the truck sees any on highway time, the drive slugs will make those front end parts wear out much faster than normal. Strictly offroad truck, I'd run the slugs, if it goes on the road, Warn premiums.
the only guy Ive ever heard of breaking them is on Pirate and hes got Bobby Longs 60CV 300M shafts and poly performance slugs. He swapped them out for CTM 300M slugs and has not had any trouble since.
Now.... do I think your truck will have any trouble out of cheapo slugs? no I highly doubt it.
Most guys with them just take them out when they drive on the street. 3 allen head screws per side and theyre in/out.
Ya know I never really though about just taking them out when on the street. Makes sense, but how does the cover stay on? Or would you just have to break out the old soup can and duct tape routine?
