hello.. I previously had a '00 explorer, and getting a new vehile. I took out my whole stock sytem and put in my own system in the explorer, and now ready for my 2nd install in the new truck. My first question is if anyone knows if the '02 navigators have a double din slot for the radio? My second question being if anyone knows if it will be posable to use the steerling wheel sound controls with an aftermarket Head Unit.
Most likely not with the steering wheel controls. When i pulled the stock system out of my 01 Xped, i was trying to utilize the rear radio controls on the back of the center console. Long story short, it can be done, but it would have been more hassle then it was worth.
I am sure that you probably have your answers by now.
The size in the Exp/Nav is Din and 1/2. There are mounting kits that allow you to install a regular din size stereo and look good. There are kits that allow you to keep the stereo controls on the steering wheel, these kits are primitive in my opinion. Buy a stereo that comes with a remote and that problem is easily solved.

you can order the steering wheel controls adapter from crutchfield for around $70 i think. I looked into it at first, but as Drawsoncad420 stated, my alpine has a remote and thats all i've used.
