Setting Crab and timing
What are the approximate settings for the carb?
Also about what should the timing be?
It would help if you could describe what you are doing in a bit more detail. What kind of Carb ? More than one ? Is the 223 stock ? Modifications ?
If it's stock : In general, back the idle mixture screw out about 2 1/2 turns. Get the vehicle started, get it up to temperature and set the idle. Screw the idle mixture in until you notice the the idle begin to slow or falter. Bring it back out until it's smooth. Then, bring it out another 1/4 turn or so.
With the timing, most folks like to ad a few more degrees of advance than the stock setting. You can usually get away with up to 4 more degrees over stock but as with any engine, you need to listen for pre-ignition. Especially if it's hot or you're pulling a hill under load.
All this adjusting can change your idle speed. So when you finalize your timing, be sure it is set while at the specified RPM. It will usually say something like 6 degrees BTDC@700 RPM or something like that.
If you don't know the stock timing setting the folks here can help you but I suggest you get your self a basic book for your particular Truck.
Let us know how it turns out.
I'm trying to get a repair manual but haven't' ordered it yet.
I'll mess with it tomorrow and see how it goes.
So I don't know the stock timming or what is a safe setting.
