I have a problem with my 1991 F250, when unlocking the drivers door with the key or the inside door handle the lock **** does not pop up all the way. do you guys think its just dirty or is somthing worn out.. thanks for the help!. S.P.
There's a plastic insert that the lock rods clip into. They can wear out or break and cause the problem you're having. The Motormite Help line of products carries a package of clips that are for Ford, GM, and Dodge. There's about a half dozen or so of them in a package and some of them are close enough to the Ford type to be used, so you won't have to buy one package for each clip you need.
If your clips are ok, then it's probably the latch mechanism. I don't know how much they are so if they're cheap, I'd just pull it out and replace it. If it's not so cheap, a good cleaning and re-greasing might solve the problem.
Thanks Matt, the key moves the lock **** up, just not far enuff to stay up. If I turn the key and keep presure on the key the door will open, but let of on the key, **** goes down..do you think its dirty or shot???
Could be either, really. A broken or worn-through plastic clip will do it, and so will a worn latch mechanism. Dirty, old grease can make the moving parts bind and not move like they should when coupled with a bit of wear. The only real way to know is pull the door panel. It's hard to see any of it though so you'll have to pull it. You'll have to disconnect the key mechanism, the door handle, and the power door lock motor if you have those. The #3 screws that hold the latch mechanism in are a real bear to get loose so you might need to use pliers on your screwdriver or if you have an impact driver, that's even better. Just clean it up and replace any clips that are worn out and regrease it really good with a good grease that can take low temperatures (if you live in a winter climate).
the description you have is typical of an internal latch mechanism having a broken part
i have sen it many times
the key is you stating having to put pressure on the key to open the door
when the clip breaks the linkage disconnects and becomes inoperable
I had problems with every door lock and window crank on my '90 CrewCab when I got it. They are all manual on this truck. ALL of the door lock and latch problems I had were from dirty, gummy mechanisms. Obnviously though you'll see any broken parts when you tear it apart.
