whitish smoke? Yes, likely a crack but could be head or block. I guess a compression test would be in order to verify one or more cylinders. Good repair shops can test your coolant for presence of exhaust. Can also pressure test the cooling side for any pressure leakdown. Can't recall if there's a shortcut to isolate it between the head and the block. Check the spark plug hole...maybe it's got a crack running off of it.
if its using water, probably a small hole in the head gasket. i would get a BARS "block and head gasket sealer" and do that. you drain the antifreeze out and put in fresh water and the sealer. drive for an hour or so, then drain and fill with antifreeze.
Come on, that bars leak stuf might be useful for minor leaks till yo gat get it fixed, but that stuff cloggs the cooling system and over time can cause overheating. I have used it before and it ruined a heater core and plugged some of the passageways through the radiator. And think about it. How is some small metal particles going to stand any change against 120 psi? The product might work well and fixing leaks at lower pressures of 15-20 psi. If it is broken, and you add some goop to the radiator, it is still broken, but now it has crap in it too.
I know its tempting since it is so much cheaper than having a head gasket replaced, but it is much cheaper to get a head gasket replaced than to still have to do so after wasting money on snake oil and also end up having to replace a heater core and radiator as well.
ok update i did take it in and it was losing pressure and it's leaking out into the exhaust. so right now im looking for a car that can get me by for a few months.
