overdrive in a 4X4

Just a passing thought, took my new 66 3/4 4 WD and my camper and went camping over the weekend and got to thinking , boy sure would be nice if this thing had an overdrive for traveling down the hiway. perty obvious that it wouldn't work in 4 WD mode but going down the hiway would sure be nice. about 20 years ago i talked to a feller that thought he could get one that bolted to the rearend. is this possible or does anone have a place where i could start looking. may be to pricy to do anyway. I have seen guys add an extra manual transmission to drop their ratios even farther. What would keep you from putting one in backwards? Ok so the grears would self distruct after a while. But it is a thought.

That is easy, buy a cheap manual shifter that you can mount in the cab. Make a link with rod ends to attach to the actual second shifter that you cut down to size. Bolt the forward end of the link below the pivot point so it matches the input in the back. Just be sure to lock reverse out otherwise that would get intersting really fast. Or worse then that forgetting your in final drive and dropping into 4x4 mode. You would have to relabel the shifter **** as well. As a saftey feature wire a LED to indicate when you aren't in normal ratio.

3rd would be normal ratio, 2nd would be your first overdrive, then 1st would be your final drive.

I think the hardest part would be making the splined yoke to attach to the maunal trannies "input" shaft.

Just throwing ideas out there is all.

I to have wanted this conversion. Here is a respnse from High Impact Wheels:
the simplest answer would be a Ranger Overdrive. $1475.

We could also do an NV4500 conversion, but we would have to use a different Tcase; I don't show any adapters for your Tcase. This system would cost more as well, more like ballpark $2500, plus is different Tcase such as an NP205F or such.

yikes, i doubt that it is not goning to happen at that price as all i do with the truck is pull my camper around close to home. with the price of fuel i cant afford to do any lengthy trips. i'll put the anme of the company on my wish list and hint to the wife 30 or 40 times LOL that i'd really like to do that. i may sit down with a calculator and estimate what the payback time would be for the amount of time and miles i drive the truck. i know i would drive it a whole lot more if it had one. the milage may not go up enough to justify the time and expence. and that prolly wont be known until it is installed and driven for awhile. Do a search online or ebay for Hone Overdrive, or Hone-O-Drive. They were made in the 60s and 70s in a couple different variations, one bolted to the front pinion carrier of a 9" Ford housing. Some Toyota Landcruisers were equipped with them from the dealer (or factory?) I am currently putting one in my '32 Ford BB but have yet to get it on the road to try it out. It is approximately a 30% overdrive.
