A couple months ago my tranny (93 explorer 4x4 xlt) was shifting back and forth unessisarily at hiway speed. Thanks to help from this site and its users I came to the conclusion that it was the torque converter clutch. It was never looked at because the problem ceased. A week ago overdrive started pulsing or slipping at speed when throttle was applied aggresivly. Yesturday , at hiway speeds (70), my tranny just "clunked" into third and would no longer shift into overdrive (4th). I am sure this is not the same problem because I can still see on the rpm band the torque converter clutch engaging and disengaging(a slight change in the rpm...about 200-300). When I lost over drive it was a dramatic difference and now at 65 i am at about 2850 rpms)....Do I need a new tranny or rebuild....if so any suggestions (other than ammco rebuild) for replacements. Would a heavyier duty unit fit my 93? Thank you very much....Matt
When I had the trans replaced in my 92, my mechanic was able to get one built by Jasper. I came with a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty for a little more then it would have cost me for a rebuild..... so it was a no-brainer at that point.
check ur speed sensor they are known to break that is what happend on both of my exploders u will have to put a ac volt meter on it and drive to see if the volt meter is eting anything ifnot bad sensor because the sensor tells the computer when to engauge over drive hope this helps
I would suggest, as I suggested last time, that you verify the electronic control (of which the aforementioned speed sensor is part) of the 3-4 shift before deciding to rebuild. There's a fair chance you will need a rebuild, but, if it were me and my money, I'd verify the operation of the external electrical controls before throwing the money at the mechanical.
If you must replace check with a Ford shop. Around my neck of the woods they beat AAMCO, AutoZone and the rebuild shops. It also came with the modifications and a 3 year warrenty.
Ford $1300 3yr (+$300 to install)
AAMCO $2200 1yr
AutoZone $2100 6m
to rebuild $1800 3m
