Need help quick starts and dies

2000 F-150 4X4, 5.4 with about 110,000 miles. Today driving home all was fine until about 15 minutes into my drive. the truck while traveling highway speed (55-60) startedto miss and sputter a few times and then came out of it for about a quarter of a mile then started to sputter again but this time i gave it some gas and it just died. pulled over to the side of the road and now when i crank the starter the engine will fire and run for about 1 second and die every time. pushed the truck off the main road but need to get this thing fixed in a hurry. any help would be great thanks in advance!

Totally clogged fuel filter? (ever changed it?)
Fuel pump quit? (do you hear it running for 3-5 seconds when you switch the ignition on?)
Inertia switch tripped? (only if the road was cratered out .... big bump, you know)

I was kind of suspecting the fuel filter. haven't replaced it since i have had the truck and don't know how many miles are on it. where is the filter located at on this truck, i looke for it last night but it was dark and i had no luck finding it with my cheap half dead flashlight. I will pick a new filter up tonight and try it. didn't pay enouph attention last night to know if the fuel pump was kicking on. the road was smooth so i think the inerta switch is probably rules out. thanks for the quick reply ncranchero. is there any special tools needed to change the fuel filter?

Replaced the fuel filter tonight. filter was not plugged i could actually blow through it fairly easily. the truck will now start but can barely keep itself running. sounds like the most wicked loping cam i have ever heard. usually only stays running for 30-45 seconds before it dies, but it will start every time. the fuel pump does kick on and pump also. anyone else had the same problem? if so or if you have any more suggestions please let me know. thanks

Will it run if you give it gas? One morning mine would start but would die instantly unless you kept your foot on the gas. I just took a wrench and started tapping on the part on the motor that controls the idle. Fixed it instantly and not a problem since.

Spent some time last night testing things out. first i tried giving it some fuel when i started, just killed it, next i tried tapping on the idle conrtol part, no change, then i tried unplugging the mass air flow sensor ne change, then i borrowed a fuel pressure gauge. i was told that this engine should have 40 psi fuel pressure at all times. turned the key on and the gauge read 40 psi, when i started cranking the gauge dropped to 30 and bounced right back up to 40 when the engine died. next i tried unhooking the fuel line from the fuel filter on the tank side of the filter and turned the key forward. about a mouthful of fuel shot out and then stopped every time. i was told theat this was normal because when there is no fuel pressure present the fuel pump will shut off instead of pumping the whole tank out. (i case of a wreck or something) i have talked to my local dealership and they are leaning towards the fuel pressure regulator. anybody agree or disagree? sorry for the long post, just trying to give all the information i can.

If you take the vacuum hose off the regulator and you see gas then it bad.
Where did you test the pressure at.. before or after the regulator?

i tested the pressure at the passenger side fuel rail. i have made progress though. i figured out that i was not unplugging the mass airflow sensor at all i was actually unplugging the air temp sensor (good one huh) after i figured out what i was looking at i took the mass air flow sensor and the tube out and found what looked to be a piece of wood or a bug shell stuck to the sensor. with the sensor out i was able to start the truck and move it around a bit. it will start fine and idle great for a while then the idle will drop for a couple of seconds and come back up to a smoothe idle. going to pick up a mass air flow sensor today and see if that fixes it.
