I just installed my AFE 6637 kit from Air Flow Systems and have a couple questions. First I checked the turbo for play and there was no in/out play that I could feel but it has some side/side play, is this O.K. or do I need a rebuild? Second after install of the filter when I am on boost, around 15psi and up when it shifts and boost goes down I get a whoosh sound. It is worse when going from 2nd-3rd when I am on it hard. Is this normal or is the turbo rubbing the housing? Is it possible to get surge with out a tuner? Just curious to the new sounds that I can hear with the new filter.
As they say-that woosh sound is "just Darth Vader talkin' to you son". That is normal. That side to side play could be an issue. Did you notice any marks on the housing where it looks like the blades have made contact?
Morning Al. The whoosh you hear is the turbo at rpm is making high boost. When the trans shifts, the rpms goes down and don't need the high boost, so the excess air goes right back out the filter. Great sound.
A little side play in the wheel is ok, NO in and out, so you should be good there. EDIT: Is this backwards Jason?
And yes on the surge with a chip. I get surge real bad when I am on it. Two ways to fix this. Install a WW (wicked wheel) or a ATS housing. Both work good, but the ATS works better according to some people.

Have fun.
My question on surge is can it happen with just intake and exahst without a tuner?

I didn't notice the housing, how much is too much side/side play? I do have 180K on it and probably wouldn't hurt to rebuild when I get the DP. I will probably get the WW before I get the tuner anyway, might as well do the rebuild then also.
The first time I was on it and heard the "Vader" sound it about scared the ***** out of me wasn't expecting it.

end play should be: 0.02-0.10MM or 0.00079-0.00394 in.
if this spec does not meet, turbo needs to be reconditioned or replaced.

I believe that any noticeable in and out or up and down play in the wheel by hand can be an issue. When there is the oil film on the bearing there should be almost zero play in the wheel.

I was thinking the oil on the bearing (when the engine is running) tightened things up a bit, so with the engine off and no oil pressure there would be a minute amount of play. Am I wrong on this Jason?
I little side to side is ok. There has to be room for the oil film and with the engine off you you pushing on it, that oil film is overcome for the moment. Engine running, the oil film returns and centers everything back up.
In and out movement is a problem.
