I took out the ash tray in my '91 and mounted it right down there. my mic I mounted right on the side of the dash cluster, works good for me.

CB Mounting in a '91

Thanks,

I ended up mounting it to the Flip down ash Tray, Only Because i use the tray to store stuff and i use the Sig Lighter for different things. The little Problem is the weight of the CB wont allow the Flip down compartment to stay shut but i dont see the need to close it anyway.

Thanks Again.

CB Mounting in a '91

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Sep-02 AT 11:54 AM (EST)]i mounted mine to the dash under the ash tray.
i dont smoke, and nobody else smokes when they ride in my truck, so it isnt a problem, but i have a fullsize radio, so the shifter about hits it (5 speed)

edit: mines a '92

CB Mounting in a '91

I mounted mine below the cubby hole, just above the 4 wheel drive shifter. It is a compact Uniden 510XL CB so it worked pretty good there. I used one of the existing screws that held the plastic to the metal crossbeam under the dash and I think I had to drill the other hole. A fulll size CB may not work as good there and may interfere with the 4x shifter. I have a Cobra power mic and I just wedged the mic holder behind the wood-grain trim piece that goes around the heat/air and radio controls. Works great unless I pull out instead of up on the mic-then the trim piece will pop off. It may work with your mic holder as well. I hope to get some pictures on this site one of these days. It is a lot easier to show you than to tell you.

Even if you mount it somewhere else, try the mic holder and see if it works behind your trim piece. It is a convienient location for it so you don't have to lean over to get the mic when you need it. I have also seen the hooks you could put on the back of the mics to hang them on the rear view if the cord is long enough. Most of the more expensive mics come with longer cords than the mics that usually come with the CBs.

Hope this helps.

I have a 5' Firestick (fiberglass) antenna mounted on a homemade mount. I heated and twisted & bent a piece of steel and mounted it above the tailight, in the crack where the tailgate closes. The bracket is L shaped and it is screwed to the truck above where the cables hold the tailgate. Kind of hard to explain.

A wilson or a K40 would probably work better but I still do go through the bank drive thru and I have seen them knocked off of bigger trucks. That antenna puts out all I need and I have seen many like it mounted to the antennas of 18 whlrs and such. It has an adjustment **** on top to set the SWRs.

I have had that little CB since 96 and it has been great. I got it tuned up by a local CB shop and it really puts out a strong signal. Not too bad for a reasonably cheap CB and doesn't take up nearly as much room. I'll try to get some pictures on here this weekend.

i work in two-way radiocommunications, and have done a lot of installations into a lot of vehicles. I'll throw you a few pointers:

First, i have done a couple mounts above the gas pedal, but i don't recommend them as they can be a severe hazard in a collision, and if yer a big guy you won't fit with it too well.

I put a cb just to the right of the ashtray in my friend's '88 f-150. it's a good solid spot but it puts the cb kinda far away.

As far as antennas go, the best places for mounting are either on the fender with an L-bracket, or on the roof. the reason for that being antennas require a ground plane (metal surface fairly level with the base) for best operation. Mounting on the top of your box or the top of a fibreglass canopy does not provide a good ground plane.

Fibreglass antennas are fine, althought i sometimes find that the type with a coil at the bottom and a steel whip perform and look a bit better.

anyway, that's my ten cents. if there's any other questions drop a line in this thread.

The uniden is very compact which is why I was able to put it there. If it weren't then it would have never fit there due to the 4x4 shifter. I am 6'3" and I don't have any trouble with it being in the way. However, I never thought about it being a hazard in a collision. I have had a dashboard nearly end up in my lap and a cb wouldn't have helped that impact any. That's a very good point! I never thought of that.

I did mount my external speaker on the right of the ashtray where you were talking about.

I still hope to get some pictures on here if I can remeber to borrow my sisters digital camera.

i put my uniden pro 538w(it ain't no little compact one neither) on the ceiling between the sun visors. it was pretty easy. the trim that is up there is metal so i drilled two holes for the radio and two for the mic mount, and i say it sure does look purty up there. some people don't even notice it. runnin the wires for the antenna, power, and PA speaker were easy and hid nice like behind all the trim panels.
