Brakes were fine and all of a sudden the rear passenger side brake locks up. No matter how slight I apply the brake it locks up and slide. No brake light or ABS light on (Mine has rear ABS only). I just had new rotors, drums, pads, shoes and hardware replaced about 3 months ago. When I back up I can hear noise only from that wheel, like a moaning sound. Any thoughts?
That moaning is a shoe dragging against the drum (sometimes you'll get the same thing if you forget to release the parking brake)....same for the grabbing. My guess, anyways!! 'sounds like your hardware that retains the shoe or the spring came off...I'd take it back to the shop that did the work as a failure. There should be no charge. That is, if that shop is very close...if not, pull that drum, and you'll see the problem...may just have to re-attach things.
I was not clear on one point. The brakes make that noise when backing up while the brake pedal is depressed. My wife just told me,, that when it is wet out that is when it does it. It was wet the day I was driving it. I took it to a parking lot and did about a dozen or so hard pumping backups to readjust the shoes. That seems to helped some but the ground was dry. I'll have to wait again until it rains to see if it happens again.
Mine did this and it was more apparent on damp days. It was the small spring that holds the shoes togather just above the adjuster it was broke. Replaced it and deglazed the shoes and everything has been good since.
To my knowledge backing up does not adjust the shoes. Setting the parking brake does. Maybe your vehicle is different from mine, but all the vehicles I drive use the parking brake to operate the adjustment mechanism.
I did also press and release the parking brake as well. The truck is doing it again today as it is rainy here today. The spring broken idea is probably it. I'll take it back to have them fix it. Brakes are the only area I am clueless. I can rip apart engines, transmissions, etc but when it comes to brakes
Also dont count on the self adjusters to do anything. They never do. Take the drum off, make sure you are not missing any hardware (compare to the other side). Next take some sand paper or any means of removing the rust ring on the drum where the shoes ride, scuff up the brake shoes, and adjust the shoes out unit you can put the drum on, and feel some resistance from the pads. You dont want it so tight you have to beat the drum on with a hammer, but you dont want it too loose either.
A leaking rear seal was the culprit when I had a rear wheel lock up problem with my 98 Ranger. 80-90 gear oil from the differential got on the shoes and made the brakes grab. New seals, new shoes and cleaning the drums cured my problems.
