Im building a pretty healthy 429. When I bought it it came with a cheap rebuild kit which I am only using some parts of. My guess is the last guy who had the motor ran out of money or something. Right now Im putting it together. I have the crank set in and I will be installing the pistons this weekend. Next on the list is to set the cam. According to my desktop dyno I will be around 500hp/torque. Any way the kit has a brand new single roller timing chain. Should I trust the off-brand single roller or just fork over the dough and buy a nice double roller?
actually I don't ever recall seeing an actual single roller timing chain, either double or silent chain (stock style). What type of cam and what types of spring pressures are you running? If your running anything but a mild hyd cam with springs similar to stock then a silent chain is fine but if your running a roller or even a solid lifter cam with some heavier spring pressures then definitely go with a good chain. My personal preference would be to just do the double roller chain anyway but it's up to you and your budget.
monster baby is right. it is up to your budget. double rollers are not that expensive in comparison to what the rest of the motor is probably worth. with 500 horse i'd say its worth the investment.
