I have a transmission that is giving me a Error code 62 (Transmission 4/3 Circuit Fault), but it only happens when it rains for a few days. Althought it is happing more frequently now. I also have a Error code 14 (IGNITION PROFILE PICKUP (PIP) circuit failure). Any help would be appricated. I previously posted a Thread 92 F250 4X4 E4OD is Shifting Funny in Wet Weather I just got the code reader to check it.
I think that is the wrong description for that code. I believe (though I don't have any documentation handy) that code 62 is the slip code. It means that when in 3rd or 4th gear with the torque converter locked the computer was able to measure some slip somewhere between the engine and the rear axle.
If there really is a problem it usually is in the torque converter clutch. The problem is that this test is VERY unreliable. It was the #1 hitter for setting false codes. There were many software changes to try and fix this, and eventually they got the test to work pretty good, but that software isn't backwards compatible to a '92.
To further complicate the issue, there were problems with the torque converter clutch in that year (and even newer ones) where the clutch apply piston cracks. This allows the clutch apply pressure to leak, and then the clutch slips and it sets a code. The clutch only has to slip 50 RPM, and that's nearly impossible for the driver to notice.
If it happens once a week or so I'd say it is a software problem with no known fix. If it is happening much more often than that I think it is a bad torque converter.
....then it shifts very very hard, and the O/D OFF light flashes.
That is how the computer deals with the detected fault condition. It maxes out line (EPC) pressure in an attempt to prevent further slippage and flashes the indicator to advise the driver that a fault has occurred.
Turning the engine off and restarting it will usually reset the mode the computer is in restoring normal operation until the next time the fault is detected.
You just answered two of my questions in one post. I have a EPC FAULT and a ERROR CODE 62. I also have another code but I think I know why that one came one.
