Do you all hear a click / ticking sound when you accelerate hard and up a grade of a hill. I also have a slight loss of power when going up hills. Don't know what to do.
Clicking is also prominent when getting up to 2k and then letting the truck coast.
If your looking for a leak in the exhaust, whether it be the manifolds or uppies look for soot. If it's a constant tickin it could be just a loose manifold bolt.
My 90 F250 sounded the same, drove me nuts then found back bolt on driver side manifold was busted .. p/o. Anyway, from what your describing check the manifold bolds. I'm not one to suggest this though as anytime I get close to removing those I tend to break another one ..
just went to muffler shop. guy says he might see a tiny bit of black b/w the block and manifold on driver's side rear. going to tighten. book says 45 ft lbs. neither of us saw soot on the up pipes. although the view isn't so great.
If you have a leak at the upper uppipes can you just replace the donut or do the pipes need replacing also due to wear?
Neal many times its best to replace the up-pipe or atleast take it out and get it expanded so the donut fits tight again. If you have an extra $700 you can get the IH pipes that have bellows instead of the donut gaskets.

While its not likely check the play in the turbo. Make sure the compressor isn't hitting the housing. Do you have a boost gauge? Also have you tried to put air to the tail pipe?
I tried to click the original thread but could not get it to come up, but if you eliminate all the exhaust possibilities, have you checked your rocker arms?? if one is worn it may not show up at idle but becomes more prevelant at higher rpms. just thinking out loud
So, turbo spins smoothly with my fingers and I don't hear it hitting side of the turbo at all. I didn't turn the truck on and listen to it just spun it with fingers.
I have yet to do the air test, going to do it today.
I was wondering if the pic on the above link could cause the click. it is of my ccv mod in which I didn't turn the doghouse around and put on two 90 deg. elbows and ran it the length of the truck.
I don't think that the CCV mod would make any noise unless you put a CCV valve inline and that in it's self could cause a click. (Is there a valve?)
If you turn the dog house around and run the hose up and over the brake unit it will make for less chance for CC fluid to puddle in a low spot and cause back pressure.
Okay so a friend and I pressurized the exhaust system. Found air leaking at the junction of the upper and lower portions of the Down pipe. Mine is a two piece. I readjusted the band clamp and still had air leaking. I tried several different ways and all had a leak especially near the bolt of the band clamp. I was thinking of getting a 3" band clamp from napa. However I was wondering if it would make much of a difference? Since the exhaust usually goes the other way and the upper portion of the dp fits inside the lower portion maybe air doesn't leak this way as much? maybe not?
So I figured I would try and get that repaired before tackling the other portions of the exhaust.
More to come.
Flea, mine leaks at that same spot. It's not a huge leak but it does like. I think eventually, on those types of clamped connections you always seem to have a little leak.
Wonder if you could do some type of exhaust heat wrap stuff that you go over the connection. Not sure if header wrap would work?
