Up pipe leak?

So in the previous thread I spoke about my truck "Click."

I hear it more than ever and it has a barely audible little whistle when I am going up a grade.

From the help of others posting I am going to investigate the up pipe exhaust theory of my leak.

How can I diagnose this problem?
In the morning I plan on getting in there since it will be cool.

Do I feel for air with the truck running, put some water on it, or what?
What do I do to figure out which one it is if any before I go throwing money at it?

Thanks,

If your looking for a leak in the exhaust, whether it be the manifolds or uppies look for soot. If it's a constant tickin it could be just a loose manifold bolt.

The ticking is rpm variable and usually not audible below 1000 rpms.
Don't see any soot, but I will go look again right now.
THanks,

So no soot except for what looks to be where my oil leak came down and hit the pass. side manifold. there is no black stuff around most of the connection b/w up pipe and exhaust manifold. but there is black stuff about an inch above.

What can I use to get this off?

Brake cleaner / engine degreaser or are these both going to be to potent and bad for me to breath when they burn?

You might want to try some soap and water. That's what I use to clean soot off of chrome stacks before I polish them.

UP pipe leak? Is this soot or old oil? pictures from friends & fun photos on webshots

Here is the link to my pics. Is this soot or old oil?

Should I replace this gasket?

This is looking up from under the truck at the pass side exhaust manifold where it connects to the up pipe.

Is there any oil or grease dripping onto that spot? It looks kind of oily on top of the black mark on the uppy.

When you touch it with your finger does your finger turn black?

The tarry looking black spot is on the manifold itself.

At first no my fingers don't have anything on them. Then I rubbed it a bit and some balck crisps rubbed off then black started to show on my finger. I did have an oil leak coming off the oil galley plug on the pass side head, (right above this). Just got it fixed and steamed the bottom of the motor.

So do you think oil or soot?

hmmm.. since you had a leak from the oil galley plug I would guess that is what turned that part of the pipe darker.

I'm sure someone else will chirp in for a second opinion.

Looks to me like its old oil. Soot will usually show at an exhaust leak spot. Another thing you can try is use shop air to pressurize the exhaust from the tail pipe. Use a bunch of rags to plug it and have a helper keep the air to it. Then see where its coming from. FYI the up-pipes usually leak up top where they go into the collector that bolts to the turbo.

Okay. I will make the rounds on bolts in the morning. If it isn't the bolts or the exhaust any other ideas?

i was sold in my head from the moment I heard it that it was an exhaust leak.

From my wrenchin' days on the gas side, this is what is sounds like.

I wonder if the intake would make a noise like this. I will check this as well.

Yes by looking from the sides of the truck. Tomorrow I will get in the bay and check as well as bring socket wrench and torque on them.

Just curious what is the torque rating for these. I don't want to over-tighten.

The bolts will probably be tight even if its leaking. At the top of the up-pipe there is a donut gasket that gets worn out as well as it wears a groove in the up-pipe itself. Look for soot on the pipes themselves also on the firewall.
