I just put a set of hooker super comp headers on my 351M and the right side lands right in the center well about 4 inches away from the cross member. The other one is right in front of the transmission pan. Does anyone know if there is a such thing as a reducing elbow for the headers. They are supposed to be designed specifically for this truck but yall know how that goes.
well im not sure. If I hadnt just bought them I wouldnt feel so bad about getting different headers. Maybe I will call my local exhaust place and see what they recomend. How did the shortys work out?
Have you checked L&L headers? They had both fender exit and chassis exit headers for my 460. I got the chassis headers as my truck is just a street hot rod. The only funky thing about them is that due to the cross-member closest to the engine they actually go under the crossmember so that they are visible looking at the truck from the side.
You might check Summit Racing - High Performance Car and Truck Parts | 800-230-3030, just search header, then enter your truck info. I've had good luck with heddman, and flowtech headers, not so much hooker. I don't like full length headers either though, seems like they all hang too low....
Check my gallery. My engine is the 400 and the headers are Sandersons' (FC3). They went in so easy I left the bubble wrap on them until after they were in to protect them.
For my 79 250 4x4 i measured out so many headers long short 2wheel 4 wheel . I found althow in my experience poor quality but the flowtech headers measured out to fit best.. i just about put them on untill two manifold bolts snapped and i chickend out. lol i know i know
i bought hedmans and they were specifically made for the 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 390, they fit perfectly, although i have to remove the starter to get them in. they were only $160 bucks from summit. plus they have a 3in. collector, just in case.lol
I think that the only way to get full length headers without going under the front cross member would be to fab them. I wanted full length headers because they produce a little more HP than shorty headers. I'm running a 545 stoked 460 in a 79 F350 that I will be using to pull a trailer so I wanted full length headers and didn't have the money to go the frabrication route.
I have chassis exit full length L&L headers with 2.5" pipe out the back and they both go above the trans crossmember. Get a good exhaust shop to do the work with custom bent pipes, and you should have no issues. -Ed
I have the long tube summit racing ones on my 351M and I ran into the same problem with the dump coming out right at the bottom of the tranny cross-member, I'm buying the shorty ones when the 460 goes in.
