At first I was going to just piggy-back onto another thread with this (probably) simple question......
But a couple of pages of searches didn't find me a good one to jump onto, so I just post this as a new thread......Apologies in advance.
Question.
What are the physical specs of the 7.3L? I've got a 2000 F250psd, and while I know what the basic PERFORMANCE specs are (235hp, 500lb tq), I don't know the physical specs, and a web search wasn't too much help (maybe I asked the wrong questions?...)
I realize I could find the former 3 pretty easy, but if someone knows offhand.....
Why I'm asking isn't really too important right now.....Let's just say I'm doing some comparisons with other engines (traditional in pickup trucks, and NON-traditional in pickup trucks.......). Other diesels, of course.....
Sorry for the 'easy' question. I know you guys are used to hard stuff and playing with mods, etc......

You're not being fair. If you want our help you have to let us in on your little dreams & desires, or whatever other diabolical applications you may be thinking of.
The 7.3 was made by International. Their version is called the T444E because for some reason the Canadians are using cubic inches and Americans are using liters to describe the same engine. As you're probably aware Ford upped the HP/TQ numbers but the base engine dimensions should be the same.
Click here and scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page to the specifications portion.

Fair 'nuf.....
Nothing diabolical.....Just don't want to sound like a 'noob'.....Or get into a discussion on stuff you guys have likely already addressed ad nauseam.....

Perfect!
You get the brass ring!!!
(If you REALLY want to know why I'm asking.....I'll tell you.....If you guys promise not to laugh......)

You spend too much time down in the club. Stop by more often and you'll find that we've got a very friendly and helpful bunch of guys & gals here. You won't get told to go search for an answer and we'll answer even the most simple questions without giving you a hard time.
We'll only poke fun at you after we get to know you better and are sure it won't create any hard feelings.
steve I promise not to laugh so spill it. Heck my nieghbor didn't tell me about a complete 7.3 including trans for sale locally for $850 because he figured I would try to shoe horn it into my 67 galaxie and go drag racing it.... the scarey part is he is right I think it would be a blast to beat up on them chebbie boys with a diesel car as well as my diesel truck.
(Keeping in mind I've not calculated engine cost, engine noise, etc.....)
Has anyone here replaced a worn-out 7.3L with a different engine?........
Specifically, one that you do NOT normally find in a 3/4 or 1-ton pickup truck?
Just looking at the CATs (June 2008 Diesel Power blurbed the C15) and kind of intrigued with their 'C' series engines as a possible (future) replacement.......
Obviously the C15 is too large and heavy.......(haha)
Why?
Inherent torque and horsepower higher than the 7.3L International---even if the 7.3L is heavily modded. Not to mention, the C9 (see below) has a 750000 expected life-span......
*Caterpillar C9
9.3L inline 6
1650lb (700lb more than the 7.3L)
335 to 350 hp at 2200 rpms (vs 235 for the 7.3L)
1150 to 1250lb tq (nothing more needs to be said here....haha)
42.5" wide (13" wider than the 7.3L)
57.7" long (22.0" longer than the 7.3L)
38.0" height (1.6" higher than the 7.3L)
Problems:
Would it even FIT into the bay?
How loud is this sucker? (they're touted as 2004 emissions/clean compliant)
If it WOULD fit, what other suspension mods would be needed for 700 extra pounds?
How much does it COST? (For that matter, what would a crate 7.3L cost?)
***Caterpillar DOES make the 7.2L C7.....Haven't checked the dimensions on that one yet (it's 400 or 500 lb heavier), but the performance specs aren't that different......
So how much money do you want to spend? You could easily hit those HP numbers and maybe 75% - 80% of those Tq numbers by adding a tuner and a few other items.
Do you have a new transmission in mind to go behind those monster Tq numbers? Have you checked into the computer brain required to run the CAT? I don't think your Ford PCM will do it. Then will your CAT computer function with the airbags & other sensors found in the more passenger style trucks we drive?
I don't think there's an extra 22" to spare without some drastic changes to the front end. Just picture what the new 6.4 looks like under the hood. After the modifications you'll end up with something looking similar.
Can it be done? I'd say sure. The only thing standing in your way is money. Is it practical? No. You'd be better off finding an engine that isn't quite so long.

In other words, ante up and drop $7500 for a crate 7.3L and shut-up already.....
Oh well....It would be 'unique' anyway....There's value in that.......
