So cmpd1781, what have you done that you're in need of a new motor?
If you're looking for something different you can drop a Cummins in there. We've got a couple of folks doing that now.
Nothing wrong at all.......
It's still a little under 100000 miles and running great.
I'm just considering a couple of things. For one thing, I'm not really interested in the new city trucks.......They're too 'dolled' up, the exhaust systems suk big time, and they get crap mileage.......
So I'm either going to stay with my model truck (1999-2003) and end up (when the time comes) getting another 7.3L, or putting a 'work' engine inside.........
I also wanted something that had all the hp and tq I needed WITHOUT having to 'mod' the engine.....(Don't you guys run into problems after you 'mod', or 'chip' the trucks?.....).
I just had an idea kick loose when I saw the C15 in the mag the other day, and started the 'why-not' questions---then jumped over here to the forum to see if (certain) 'other' engines would even fit into the engine bay---and what it would take to make something like a Caterpillar C9 or a C7 (the others are just obviously too big to make it) work in a superduty 250 or 350.......
Me either, but if you haven't even hit 100k yet then I'd say it's too soon to start planning a swap that may be obsolete by the time you need it. I've got around 253k on mine and I'm no where near the top of the list for high miles.
But several of those guys above me do have modded engines.
Personally I wouldn't look so much at the cat engines, by the time you find one small enough to physically fit it's basically back at the same or less hp then the 7.3 or the 5.9 cummins unless you mod it which defeats the entire purpose your trying for. My personal recommendation would be either like you said buy a crate motor and replace yours or do the swap to the cummins since it has a great reputation, decent power moded or not, has a lot of aftermarket support just like the PSD and since it's already been done in the past you KNOW it will work and you can buy most of the parts you need to do it.
But like someone else pointed out if you don't have problems you know of yet 100k is a whole lot early to worry about replacing it yet, it's not like a gasser that 100k is when you start worrying about it. Think of it this way, typical gasser had a 36,000 mile warrenty and you typically didn't worry to much about them for 3 times that amount until they had over 100k so the PSD has a 100,000 mile warranty so figure same basis of approx 3 times the warranty your looking at 300,000 before you should be concerned (and believe it or not thats actually about right)
As to modding them. Heck I have mine with kwik filter 5" straight pipe exhaust, regulated return fuel system and a DP Tuner with 40, 60 80 120 and 140hp tunes and I race it regularly at the local 1/8th mile tracks and currently has 132K on the clock with no problems beyond standard maintnance (hoses, belt, water pump, Alt, and starter)
